In AOT episode 2x8, The Hunters, the show hunts for a way to bridge the gap between the epic battle between Reiner and Eren last episode, and the epic conversation that I hope will happen between Reiner, Bertholdto, Eren, and Ymir in the next episode.

Time for some good hangs

That episode description is so sassy yet so accurate lmao Also I know you probably already watched the next couple episodes but retroactively, be ready to take lots of mental (or literal) notes LOL

I'm a bit behind this week so this is actually as far as I've seen :) Preparing my mind in 3, 2...

I have always really liked Hannes as well. Armin and Mikasa eating those crackers was framed so weirdly epic lol, it reminds me of the potato chip scene from Death Note.

benj

Armin is the male Historia, or vice versa. You can't change my mind.

The E/M/A flashback to that brawl in the middle of town is a total "MY CABBAGES" moment for me lol. And that conversation between Mikasa and Armin afterwards... "Eren always runs off on his own, leaving us behind..." "But all that I want is to be at his side." Just wow. Brings a tear to my eye. I always love it when the dynamic between specifically Mikasa and Armin is explored.

Something clicked for me while listening to Hannes talk about Eren's "false peace" warning this time around. I think that gives kind another insight into Eren's character. I think in a way, he was always kind of wishing the wall would fall exactly like it did so that he would not only be proven right about his warnings but also so that it gave him a purpose. He wanted the chance to go out and take the world on in a valiant crusade where he fought with everything he had. In contrast, Hannes as a character was able to realize the value of the "false peace" and didn't take that time for granted. Hannes doesn't derive happiness or purpose in his life from the fight like Eren does. I don't think he actually believed the walls could never fall, he just didn't wish they would like Eren sort of did. Hannes was much more resigned to hope that he was lucky enough that they wouldn't in his lifetime so that he wouldn't have to encounter the horrors that came with it, allowing him to just enjoy his simple pleasures

I can say that when I started watching the show again, Mikasa's character was kind of frustrating to me. She felt very one-note, and to be fair, at this point in the show, she is. That being said, events in the next season and season 4 have made me appreciate her a whole lot more. It's hard to explain without spoilers, but when you get there I think you'll know. Edit: Also, the reason Mikasa didn't remember Eren was taken is because of the concussion/head trauma.

agoodwintv

There is a shot with both of them in the same frame and they look like siblings

agoodwintv

That's a great insight. There's sort of this weird incentive with being driven like he is for a certain cause or warning about a certain danger. If it doesn't happen you get no acknowledgement, even if you in some part helped prevent the problem. I agree that Hannes isn't as blind as Eren wants to believe he and everyone is. He just would prefer to live the life we saw at the beginning of the show rather than the one he has now, which is perfectly reasonable.

agoodwintv

While it didn't happen in this episode directly, I can feel that the show is taking the time to set Mikasa up for development down the road, so I'm patient.

It is so hilarious to me that Eren could kill two grown men at the age of 9 but then had to deal with the neighborhood bullies and lost every fight...

Matthew B

lost? He jerk slammed one kid to hell and at least concussed another. Eren was a savage from day one.

Nick

@A Goodwin TV Yeah for sure. Also, while I know you might be looking for brightness in AOT, the story is both different from FMA and similar at the same time. It's much darker, and focuses on how life is unpredictable and you have to move forward despite what happens. Life isn't fair, but these characters keep going. Whereas FMAB is a way more direct depiction of hope and triumph amidst darkness. Both are good approaches, because both are real.

Nick

@benj I was never pissed at her just felt like there was lost potential in her character. I no longer feel that way especially after this latest season part 1. I get what you mean though

Anonymous

SPOILERS(?) not really since there's no context but still... im surprised to see mikasa's headaches go this far back. i'm sure they go back even further but this one was disguised so well, i'm glad i caught it

Nick

I mean to be fair though Eren caught both of those guys by surprise and had the intent to kill based on the situation. With the bullies, even if Eren is a little koo-koo for cocoa puffs, he's likely not aiming to kill them. Having a knife vs having no weapon is pretty different as well.

meg

It was shown also sometimes in season 1 after Mikasa thought Eren died and the time after they escaped the titans with Hannes when Eren’s mom died. But yeah when that was revealed I remember all those times and was like woahhhh

benj

@matthew whats the spoiler? I deleted anyways but I don't really see what was a spoiler in my comment. Mikasa is doing the same cool spinny move as Levi, Goodwin's made that observation already. Then I was giving my personal opinion on Mikasa and her kinda one dimensional character. How is that a spoiler?

Nick

@benj I think he interpreted what you wrote as hinting to a scene later in the show. I personally thought it was fine out of context but kind of get what he meant

Alex Begley

@Nick I feel like everything I thought was underdeveloped or one note at first eventually got fleshed out. It’s to the point now that I have full faith in the show to be self-aware of what it’s doing and intentionally moving in a certain direction to exploit what we interpret. It’s just tough going in cuz we all know not every show does that so our guard is usually up

Shark-ira

"Daddy Hannes" Ah, yes. The god-tier commentary I signed up for. Thank you.

Yusuf

A particular discussion in a scene in this reaction video gave me chills as someone who has read most of the manga chapters (1 left to read). Isayama really knew from the beginning how things will be towards the end. Wow!

Yusuf

This anime gets very dark. So, you should embrace for that ahaha! About mentorship, most humans will never get the mentors or parents they need. Imagine how different the world would be otherwise.

This might just be me being a Sasha fangirl but when the steam of the colossal was getting serious, she really risked her own safety and came over to Armin and shielded him from the steam, resulting in Armin getting no injuries like Hange. In the episode it seems like a small thing but I personally love moments like this. You talked about morality and which characters you would trust, and I think little moments like these make it clear that Sasha is one of the purest people left in the show.

Anonymous

I’m really enjoying your commentary and reactions, highlight of this episode: “Cracker. Very nutritious. Wonderful.”

Nick

The Sasha and Connie bond... a simple spell but quite unbreakable. My two favorite characters for that exact reason.

benj

Lol I was abt to comment how I love the dry sarcasm every time their is a title card about something random during high drama/action scenes. I was dying laughing at that.

Anonymous

Hahaha me too, his reactions to the info cards could make a funny dry sarcasm compilation

agoodwintv

Yeah... Even OPTIMALLY it's always going to be imperfect too. When I think about having kids I am very aware that I will make a lot of mistakes lmao. But I guess we just do our best. It's one of those "be the change you want to see" things I suppose.

Nyashaxo

I love the way you rationalised Mikasa's mindset

Mikasa is one of my favourite characters in this show, so I love how you didn't just write her off as one-note like a lot of people do, since her development is very gradual and subtle. It's not as in-your face as it is for many other characters, but I found it to be sort of beautiful in its own way.
