They try to trick you because Toph's VA also voices a random lady earlier in the episode, the one asking Korra if she's okay outside of the alley. Great reaction as always! This season is at least just as good as 3, so I can't wait to see what you think of it.

The Melon Lord . . . has Returned.

The subtitles ruin the tooth reveal the deacons she speaks. That’s why I recommend you watch without em.

I got teary eyed too hearing her call Korra twinkle toes

i always enjoyed how they visualized korras mental illness i love the metaphor of her running from/fighting herself it hits very close to home

It’s beautiful how Korra meets Toph in the same place Aang had a vision about her.

"Nice to see you again Twinkle Toes" always makes me happy cry

this is probably my all time fave episode of the ATLA world. it's such a good take on trauma and depression. even when you physically heal there is so so much more about you that you need to heal from. its so realistic and personal and it just works so well. i love the symbolism of the chained avatar state. it's like Korra is seeing her worst form where she is so primal trying to survive and it scares her. can't wait for the next couple eps

Katara and Toph coming through with the advice and healing ☺️ Its funny because back in ATLA they obviously clashed a bit but they’ve both grown up and are able to give advice and help heal by giving different perspectives. This show definitely went places that animated shows don’t normally go and I’m really glad they went this route and talked about mental health.

This is my personal favorite episode in TLOK, and definitely one of my favorites in the Universe overall. The way Bryke handled PTSD, mental illness, and recovery is so heartwarming. Gave some much needed representation to children animation. Zuko and Korra have always had alot of parellels in personality. So grateful that they never made either of their recoveries a linear process or chose to just move on, as many shows choose to do. Love that Katara has had a hand in guiding two avatars through immense trauma, a great portrayal of her healing nature. Toph is obviously going to be a big part of it too, very excited to see your reactions to her throughout the season. (Oh no, I just realized I basically re-iterated what everyone else in the comments was saying. Its clear this was a big thing that resonated with a lot of people, myself included. Gotta love the writers)

You know i'm not sure i entirely got your opinion about toph's return xD. This is definitely one of my favourite episodes in the avatar universe and korra's recovery arc is one of the most nuanced i've ever seen. I appreciate how this episode and her arc shows that recovery and living with mental illness is not completely straightforward as for every few steps forward you take and good days you have you're going to take some steps back stray observations: asami being the only one korra feels comfortable being emotionally vulnerable to out of the current team avatar is a far cry from where they started off in s1. And out of all the casting for the adult gaang, Toph was definitely the best. something about the way the actress portrayed her just screams Toph

malikparah

i agree korra's character arc is definitely the spiritual successor of zuko's and probably one of the reasons why they're my 2 fave characters in the avatar universe

hays collins

Its just a manifestation of her PTSD

newairnation

I think the "phantom Korra" that was following her is both a representation of the emotional/psychological trauma that she's striving to recover from and a visualization of her fractured connection with the Avatar Spirit (Raava). The firebending sparring match seems to be a nod to the one in the first episode, complete with the same music and everything. It really is heartbreaking to see how her confidence and enthusiasm from back then has been replaced with fear and self-doubt. On a lighter note, I find it hilarious how adult Aang still thought his airbending marble trick was the greatest thing in the world.

Honestly I’ve always seen the Korra visions (spirit Korra or whatever we call it) doubling as a representation of self inflicted pain. When people are isolating themselves and in their darkest points, they often subject themselves to more negativity. I used to self isolate from friends a lot and definitely knew it was taking a toll on me, but I kept doing it because I was afraid. I feel like Korra running from republic city because she saw that vision of herself is very symbolic. It definitely resonated with me

Do you really think friendships can last more than one lifetime...?

Nick

I think it’s representing both her own isolation and how it’s almost like a poison to her (interesting) but also the trauma she went through.

hays collins

They added that last line by Korra when she figred out it was toph at the end of the book 4 trailer when it came out and when i tell you I FREAKED OUT. Everyone did.

Francesca White

man, this is really one of my fav episodes in the series

agoodwintv

The casting was so good I could just feel it was her. Not sure how she pulled that off but it's great!

WolfWarrior623

Honestly I'm not sure I can add more than all the other comments people have. This is such a great episode and one of, if not the best in LoK. I love it so much, and I love how they handled it. I also really like how they've rounded out how Korra's grown and her arc as the Avatar. She spent 3 seasons trying to do her job, and the world kept shooting her down and wanting nothing to do with her or not needing her, and now that they finally do, she can't do it because she's just been absolutely broken by her last fight, both physically and mentally. and to top it all off and add salt to the wound, there's other people out there, Kuvira, and the Air Nation, doing what she feels "she" should be doing. I also absolutely agree with what you said about how everyone else is/was treating Korra vs how Toph would. Just going off personalities, Korra's the type that would definitely respond better to Toph's gives 0 shits no sugarcoating attitude, it's what she needs over how things were going in the South Pole.

Brimmy

now you see why i completely stopped giving Korra shit in this season mental illness isn't fun and is even LESS fun when its physically manifested itself and can kick ur ass which btw the way they showcased her PTSD is fascinating to me honestly

Phoenixfire2020

I love how the writers revisited the idea of some friendships being so strong they can transcend lifetimes (ALTA Season 3 Episode 6). Toph, at the end of that episode questions the idea of it and she is used to prove it in the end.

Anonymous

Me too... It's extra specially because that's a solidification that friendship can last longer than a lifetime (at least when you are still a life, and your friend is the Avatar)

I really like this episode. Things that really caught my attention were the letters and seeing how all of the avatar gang "grew up". You can really hear the changes in their voices. Also, Korra has always depended on her physical strength to solve her problems. She has always been "hot headed". Now she can't depend on that. For the first time in her life she has to be in-tune with her spiritual side.

Blackeyedlily

There is a great YouTube video titled Korra is Zuko’s True Successor. It was inspired by this episode being called Korra Alone and especially the haircut scene. It goes into a lot of detail about how Korra’s story is far more similar to Zuko than it is to Aang. I found it to be very interesting. But it does have a couple of images from season four. So I would recommend not watching it until you complete this season. It is also a nice touch IMO that Toph showed up in the same place where Aang originally had a vision about her.

TJ Frangie

Truly one of the best episodes of Korra. The creators do an amazing job at representing PTSD and how it feels to be “drowning” in depression. Incredibly difficult to watch, especially if you relate in any way. But I think it’s also hard because you see how far Korra has fallen. She truly is suffering. A really awesome quote I found was “Aang was a normal person who became the avatar, but Korra was an avatar who became a person.” She has gone through so much and has dealt with a lot of people either not wanting her or realizing she isn’t some all powerful person. She can be defeated, yet in the beginning of the show she felt like she was unstoppable. Love the reactions man.

Cody Taylor

That's a beautiful way to put and so true. "aang was a normal person who became the avatar, korra was an avatar who became a person." love that

Cody Taylor

Such a beautiful way to connect the two series. Take notes writers that is the kind of call back that makes sequels amazing ❤️

Ruma Risto

The parallels between Korra and Zuko are so amazing in this episode. Even her bruised left eye kind of reminds me of Zuko's scar.

Jerry Ferrell

I don’t think hints would have been any easier had she stayed around her friends. I feel like the distance was what allowed her to confide in Asami to some degree. So much of her identity is tied up in being strong that I think she wouldn’t have been able to be vulnerable in front of her friends. Seeing them moving forward with her lives close up while she remained stagnant, might have made her depression even worse. While a support system is helpful, I think it only really works when you’re open to that support. I think she was able to be open and work with Katara since she’s known her for her entire life but even then, she only went to her after some prompting from her mother. I also think it’s significant that we see her getting visions of her self in the avatar state as well as Zaheer. I think his implies that Korra is at war both with the ptsd of nearly dying as well as the image of herself as the avatar vs her current state.

Cody Taylor

It really is a sign of a great piece of art when it feels like its speaking directly to you on any given day

Nick

I just watched the video, thank you for mentioning it. I had actually mentioned the similarities between Zuko and Korra (in some debate about Korra on a diff YT channel) before but nobody agreed, this video makes me feel better about my belief lol
