Enter the void. Empty, and become wind! 💨💨💨💨

Joseph Hallowell

loving the consistent upload times lol

Calvin Brindley

At 8:58 👀, you’re spoiling us

newairnation

Seeing the Northern Air Temple get destroyed genuinely pissed me off. The Air Nomad culture really can't catch a break.

agoodwintv

Yeah... Though I thought Tenzin was gonna die last episode so I mostly felt relief.

Anonymous

the animation and choreography is INSAAAAAANE... never fails to blow me away

Shado

Did you know the voice of Ming Hua is the same VA for Azula? I just remembered this.

R'Mani Leavell

I want to say this now because I don't want to tell you too late and I don't want to tell you later, but if you watch with subtitles, DO NOT watch Book 4 episode 2 with subtitles. I can explain why after you watch the episode, assuming you don't figure it out on your own.

Dierane

Another season, another air temple destruction. Rewatching season 3 Ive got to laugh at all the setup that went into Bolin metalbending, just to hit us with the lava in the end. Very unexpected. Kuvira too, she was in every single Zaofu episode in the background. Her saving Tonraq was a nice touch too, Im genuinely so glad they didnt kill any more parents. Also that fight scene where she was working so efficeintly with her father was top notch and really showed how far their relationship has come since season 2. Maybe Im not watching enough shows but I feel like there isn't enough well done father- daughter duo fight scenes. Anyways, I got to go prepare emotionally for the next episode. Looking forward to your commentary!

jassihere

Now that I think about it, it might make more sense for a villain to attain that power especially by detaching. I’m not saying that people who are considered good are bad by detaching, but it makes sense that someone like Zaheer is able to detach themselves to succeed in their cause. Also next episode has my absolute favorite moment. I keep saying it but you’ll know it when you see it. I’m really really excited. Eeeeeee 😊

agoodwintv

Yeah, though I keep forgetting to pay attention for it in the show. I think she does enough to make it a distinct voice / character.

Dierane

I guess you now understand all the references to this episode being "mind blowing".

KJ Gaona

Zaheer reached his version of enlightenment in a rather painful way, but in return for having the right perspective on it, he gains power that airbenders generally can't attain. For all their talk of detachment, they really didn't seem to reach airbending's full potential. Not that we've seen anyway. Interestingly, Jinora has a level of spiritual power that even Zaheer doesn't quite seem to have in the form of her astral projection. What's more, it's made stronger by her attachments to people. I wish we knew more about the old airbenders and how often they achieved that kind of ability.

agoodwintv

Yeah I got faked out so bad by the metal bending lol Now I'm trying to think of father-daughter duo fight scenes...

WolfWarrior623

This is probably my favorite episode of book 3. I just love every scene in it. Seeing Su & Lin fight side by side, so many setups for things, Bolin becoming a Lavabender, which I absolutely did not see coming the first time I watched it, the Northern Air Temple being destroyed, etc. God damn that temple in particular just can't catch a break, first it was full of machines, attacked by the fire nation twice, and now it's just got lava everywhere. At least P'li went out with a bang. I'll show myself out now.

Dierane

lmaoo. Gotta say Suyin was brutal with that one. Both her and Sokka killed a combustion bender.

Aidan Pullen

Let go your earthly tether. Enter the void. Empty and become wind. There's just something so wild and powerful about that moment, and I love it. That and the shot where Zaheer is floating cross-legged in the air while meditating. So cool.

BREAKING NEWS: REACTION YOUTUBER BLOWS UP INNOCENT, SINGLE-MOM CANTALOUPE IN ORDER TO GAIN THE POWER OF FLIGHT

Anonymous

I've heard people theorize that Bolin's able to lavabend because his father's from the Earth Kingdom and his mother's from the Fire Nation

Anonymous

These last two episodes- with all the fights, surprises and close calls - always makes me so stressed! Definitely some of the best episodes in the series. You can tell that the creators really took advantage of the green-light for seasons 3&4. Everything just comes together so well. But I'm going to start emotionally prepping for the next episode; gets me everytime.

Anonymous

That is a really good point; detachment in air nomad culture and with the avatar state seem to have different meanings and contexts. I love how Jinora's abilities are highlighted in a way that challenges Zaheer, a tribute to the airbender's legacy

NitrousOxide19

i love korra's growth, she is the first one who thinks to give herself up instead of fighting

NitrousOxide19

i hate the criticism that she never grows in this series, its just plain wrong and it really downgrades how amazing this show is

DrowsyCody

Aang in the the first episode of atla said “if you want to be a bender you have to let go of fear.” That really shown through with Bolin they were on a downward slope and had no where else to go and Bolin let go of his fear or dying or getting hurt and just ran straight for the lava and halted it. That’s pretty incredible. Also the only other people we know to be lava benders are ghazan and all the avatars after avatar Szeto were capable of it. We see Szeto of the first when he bends lava from 4 volcanos at once and again with Kyoshi when she breaks off Kyoshi island. We don’t know much about ghazan a life but I’d like to think his parents were earth and fire nation citizens like Bolin so he would be able to heat up rock into lava

Blackeyedlily

I agree about your thoughts on P’li. She was just as likely involved in this whole thing because of her love for Zaheer, and how he had freed her, then for any true commitment to the Red Lotus cause.

Cody Taylor

It's the truest statement of earthbending. Like when toph was teaching aang is was all about being so unmovable the earth has no other option but to bend to your will. And that's what bolin did he became unmovable in that moment he stopped running and stood his ground

I find the connection between detachment/enlightenment and the ability to fly very interesting. Specifically, Zaheer's mention that "only one other airbender in history" had unlocked the skill. You may remember in the ATLA finale when Avatar Yangchen tells Aang: "Many great and wise air nomads have dethatched themselves, and attained spiritual enlightenment". Could there have actually been a lot more flying airbenders at one point, or does it suggest that the Air Nomads (except for Guru Laghima) had a false or incomplete concept of enlightenment?

Jupiterninja

When you were talking about how maybe this episode Bolin will learn metalbending, I knew you would be surprised by the lavabending! :D Such a cool moment. Also i have no idea if this is true or not but I suspect there was initially a little more animation to P'li's death, but they cut some frames due to the response to the Earth Queen's death.

agoodwintv

I'm no expert on this and I'm not sure how it applies to these shows, but I believe in Buddhism there are multiple levels of enlightenment. Though I think the letting go of earthly attachments is probably at the "top."

agoodwintv

It definitely feels like a cut happened there. I went back and watched again because I had the sense I had missed it somehow.

Drake Chuckle

This doesn't make sense. Why are waterbenders allowed to alter their element's temp but it's gotta be super complicated for earthbenders to do the same? Making lava should be no different than making water into steam.

Drake Chuckle

I think that attaining a specific 'state' for a power has always been vastly overblown. Remember when a fire bender needed to have total peace of mind to generate lightening? Now it is a much more common skill. The same goes for metalbending, which was thought impossible (so obviously it was attempted) forever until toph did it. Now there are droves of them. I think people get too caught up in the ways of thinking when in reality these abilities exist. There are mental blocks and just knowing it's possible may open up the door for many more people to learn. I would not be surprised if flight doesn't actual require being in Zaheers state of mind. His state of mind got him there, but it's not a requirement. Remember this: This technique has existed since the beginning for us. Air Bison use it every episode.

R. Lewis

If you go back to the Zaofu episodes you'll notice Kuvira is very present. She's with Suyin when we first meet her, she's the guard that fights Zaheer, and she's pretty much the only guard who has multiple speaking lines. They very subtly set up her presence for next season.

DrowsyCody

Also Goodwin! if you remember in the avatar wan episodes the airbenders could fly too. The tattoos of the original airbenders were just a straight line with arms and a head to represent there selfs. They had no attachments. When they met the bison they took note of the bisons arrows and that’s why they now got arrows to signify the original airbenders. They became so attached to their bison (among other things) they lost the ability of flight.

Neth110

I'm not sure that that was supposed to be "flying", rather it was more of floating on cloud-like balls of air. This is clearly different, and I think they make a point of that

Darby

I still believe they shouldn't have gone with 4 seasons of 12-14 episodes per but rather two seasons with maybe a midseason finale of sorts around those episodes and have them last 26-28 in total. Even if the first two seasons were unable to be combined, It would have given them much more time to flesh things out such as Zaheer's gang and maybe could have had Korra deal with the ramifications of leaving the portals open. It also would have given them the opportunity to have Zaheer's grasp of airbending gradually improve rather than him being able to do anything conceivable almost immediately. I just feel like they had more story to tell but just couldn't in the time frame they set themselves.

thevoidbender

I think that would be ideal in hindsight but to be fair it wasn’t the time frame the creators or writers set it was mostly on Nickelodeon for how short each season was.

P'Li - dies Goodwin - "Well Zaheer, let go your earthly tether. enter the void, empty, and become wind." Zaheer - "let go your earthly tether. enter the void, empty, and become wind." Goodwin - surprised Pikachu face.

Kassandra

She's also on a Zaofu newspaper Lin is reading and is just in the background frequently.

Lily

I'm catching up on these episodes late so sorry if someone already said this. I remember a scene it ATLA when someone (sorry, can't remember who) was telling Aang he cannot let go of his earthly tether because as the Avatar, he has a connection and duty to serve the world.
