The problems with the Northern Water Tribe are just the tip of the iceberg.

Ah yes, the ever present "us vs them" mentality. The conflict with "the other". The fear of change. I've always considered myself a fairly open-minded person, and have never really understood these radical mindsets. Then again, I'm young, and haven't had any experiences that would give me super strong opinions one way or another. I feel like this type of conflict is sort of topical given a lot of current events, and how polarized things are right now. It's important, I think, to sometimes just step back and look at everything and realize that we're all in this together at the end of the day. I know it's idealistic to think that way, but that's just what comes to mind. I also really like how they really go into the conflicts between the North and South, and how they really did try and keep things cohesive in terms of that when going into Legend of Korra.

I have always related to Katara and her grief and feelings surrounding the loss of her mother. I lost my father when I was very young and there is a certain fear of them being forgotten, of being replaced, and the want for them to be with you. I think we see that a lot through her struggle with change and her struggle with her father moving on. The Southern Water Tribe is where her mother lived! It's where she died! It's where her memories of them are. And to see the place changing and changing at the hands women her father is "replacing" her mother with is a hard pill to swallow. I also think there is something to be said for how difficult it can be to leave someplace and come back to find it so different. I do like that we start to see the conflict between the North and the South here and that it does make sense in terms of LOK.

Wow that was very well put, thank you. You're right. So much changed so fast and for Katara it's deeply personal and hard to cope with.

Regarding what you said about us believing that people elsewhere, I always have the opposite reaction. I'm German and when I travel I'm always like "people here a so nice and polite. Back home everyone is rude" XD. Some people think this comic is boring but I always liked the personal and political issues it deals with. Plus having all of team Avatar together is cool. Zuko only shows up briefly, but it is interesting seeing him at the South Pole again. Also his firebending has gotten so much better. Now he can jet-propell himself at night in the cold (a.k.a when firebenders are weak) while carrying another man. Are you planning on also reacting to "lost adventures" and "team avatar tales"? They are a mixed bunch but have some cool stories.

Catching up on these vids! This comic is probably one of my favorites because we got to see some real sibling connection between Sokka and Katara. Also, not sure if you got this part, but the reason Aang and the other members of the gang look bigger in the comics is simply because they've gotten older. At the end of the Search, Aang and Toph are 15, Katara is 17, Sokka and Zuko are 19 or 20. These are mostly estimates though.
