During the first test, Ehre (the female mage that had flowy hair and fought Fern) mentions that fighting Fern felt like she was fighting her grandfather. Ehre also mentions to Wirbel that she could ask her grandfather to take them to the northern lands because he is a first class mage. In the ending slideshow we see her grandfather is Lernen! The dude who made the escape golems and tried to off Frieren.
