At 17:06 Genau says "So she's the last great mage." From the way I understand it, and from what people have explained to me (and I think it's a quite important and relevant bit of information) the "great" here is not (really) an adjective to denote she the quality of her magic ability. It's part of the job description. She is not a "Mage", she is a "Great Mage" (perhaps having both words capitalized would help viewers more). Frieren is not just a mage who was with the party of the Hero Himmel. We've seen enough evidence by the reaction of other mages when they find out about her that to assume that any of the first class mages could have been part of the party. No, she is BOTH a Great Mage AND the mage who p-a-r-t-i-c-i-p-a-t-e-d in defeating the Demon King. It was a team effort and it's logical that people think Himmel did most of the job, despite what the truth might actually be (Frieren might have done 75% of the work, we won't know until we get the relevant flashback, but the important thing is that Frieren doesn't brag about it and if no one else passed it down, the knowledge is now lost). By the way, Denken is also above taking the test, same as Frieren. He might not be leagues ahead of them, like her, but he's definitely on the same level as a first-class mage. I think they say something like that in a previous episode. And even he knows that even if he could, in a practical sense, just head North, he shouldn't do it, and instead get certified first.

Alright, today we have one of my favorite characters, Denken. His name means "to think", and I think it rightly describes his personality. He is calm, thoughtful, and rational, and he has some of the best takes on stuff. Also, the bit that made me fall in love with him is when he's just like, "I'm out of magic, you're out of magic, put'em up!" It's just so great. Also, a second, shorter translation for Laufen. Her name means "to run", which simply references her speedy spell.
