Love the Hunter Exam comparisons

Jasmine Tea Enjoyer

This exam arc is better in every conceivable aspect than the Hunter x Hunter exam arc.

The HxH references are pretty much on the nose, right down to alternate universe Gon and Killua playing rock paper scissors to settle disputes, and Hisoka using texture surprise to become a murder waifu

Oak

Übel is totally the Hisoka of this arc. She even has nearly the exact same setup with killing a previous examiner. I really like the dynamic between Frieren, Kanne and Lawine. It’s interesting for Frieren’s character on its own, but Kanne and Lawine also manage to be interesting characters. Can’t wait for the rest of the Hunter Exam!

Oak

Eh, I’d say both have their strengths. Also need to keep in mind the Hunter Exam was the first arc of HxH and Togashi was still finding his footing. I’d say the Hunter Exam ends up being surprisingly relevant for many things that happen during later arcs. Frieren has the advantage of having already established its main characters and world, as well as being able to take inspiration from the Hunter Exam.

I normally don't like defending education practices broadly speaking, but I think Alex was asking way too much of assessments. I don't think it's possible to assess knowledge or skill in a way that will predict how people's abilities will hold up after years with or without practice. They are snapshots at best, and obviously therefore we should only use them as such, not as infallible indicators of distant future or past levels of mastery. But if tests or grades aren't getting at the ability at all, then that is absolutely on the teacher to fix it. If a student gets out of a Japanese class with an A and can't communicate orally and in writing in Japanese at that level, then something is very wrong. The longer I teach, the more I realize how many teachers don't actually follow that, and instead award grades or give out penalties for things that are unrelated to mastery like completion of busy work and mere on-time attendance. All I can say is, I hope that practice dies with my generation.

Imagine immigration in the early 1900's. You start from India or Egypt, and end up in the US. You say you were a teacher, or a car mechanic. You could even show them your certificates. No one is gonna know what the hell you're about or what your papers say (I deliberately put it early 1900's so that the ties between nations and automatic recognition of degrees is not established in the slightest). Of course they're gonna have to test you to get the same job. The reasons more mages existed during Demon King's reign than present day is an interesting topic to explore. First of all, they obviously needed more people to fight. Right now, they're not accepting 15yos in the army, but during WWI, II, they gladly gave them a rifle and send them in. Secondly, it's obvious that peaceful times give you less incentive to study incredibly hard to get power, when said power is not perhaps the deciding factor of whether you may be able to survive tomorrow or not. Finally, I think, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a political decision. Too many powerful people who can kill dozens with a spell, or perhaps fight each other and level a whole district is not good for a stable and peaceful governance. Plus, they may be after power themselves. There is probably enchanting magic (charm, hypnotizing, mind control etc) after all, which is dangerous. Ah, we're doing that thing, when we strategize behind the cameras so the plan can come as a surprise. Yes, we have to do that.

man this show is so great. Can't wait for the next ep but sad to see it end soon. Another W from Goodwin!

Oak

That's clearly not what I'm saying. You yourself compared it to the Hunter Exam and that's also what I was doing. There are plenty of other exam arcs out there, but there are some very easy comparisons to make to the Hunter Exam.

HxH voice actress in here too.

I do think it's practically impossible to design a perfect system where 1 unit of school procedure equals one unit of successful and useful learning for every student simultaneously, yet overall I just think the goal of education is too often lost somewhere in the "this is the way we do things" mentality of school. All of this is anecdotal but having lived a relatively full life outside of school and having applied myself to a great many things, so much of what I was subjected to in school now feels trivial at best and antagonistic towards me as a student at worst. An example I've given is when I read my psychology textbook cover to cover, took a great interest in the material, and got a 105 on the cumulative final, yet failed the class (delaying my graduation!) because I didn't hand in 1 mandatory assignment.

That's a good analogy. I could see that for Frieren if she wanted to join a professional group or something like that. But she's just out here doing her own magic stuff and what's more she defeated the demon king. Even then I think the registration thing holds up somewhat for crossing the border into a dangerous area, but if she isn't able to just walk in and say "hey look what I can do" and immediately get certified, then the test is what I feared about jumping through hoops to impress less qualified people

Ryan

Yeah that is a terrible, unethical grading practice, and that kind of abuse of power is really inexcusable. My point was only that the test (or other forms of assessment like interviews or practical tasks) should be able to measure your knowledge of the material at that time. I think that is an achievable and worthwhile goal. I have the example of an undeserving 'A' (the "false positive" case), but false negatives are just as bad. If people demonstrate mastery of the subject material, their grades should (within reason) reflect that.

Right, so, one clarification: It was HIMMEL (and party) that defeated the Demon King (this is what the world has learned). Imagine a RPG video game. ONE is the protagonist/hero, and the rest are henchmen. There were no other witnesses. Even the people who know the name Frieren, don't know what Frieren can really do. It's not like everyone left autobiographies. In this arc, there will be people with less power than Frieren who are not 1st class either and who perhaps would be successful (we don't EXACTLY know how the Demon King campaign went and how much Frieren's power was a factor) if they replaced her in Himmel's party. In this very episode, she admits that there were 11 magically weaker (less mana) people that beat her. Realistically, she has the power to just go North and ignore checkpoints. She chooses to follow society's rules because it's the path of less resistance and maybe lines up with her moral compass. By the way, I can go and do wheelies on a motorcycle in front of the examiner and ask for a motorcycle license. They won't give it to me unless I also do the written part and the standardized pathing test.

Awwww yeah, time for my favorite arc. And also my favorite names! I've been excited to talk about Übel for a while, because I'm actually writing a book whose main antagonist's name is Übel. It mean 'evil', or just generally 'bad' in German, and can probably tell you what kind of person she is. As for the many other characters just introduced, I'll translate their names when they hold more of the spotlight.

Jasmine Tea Enjoyer

I said this arc was better than the Hunter x Hunter arc cause everyone in the comments was talking about HxH and so was Goodwin in the video description. I would have never brought up that show otherwise. I feel like you could make all the same comparisons with the "plenty of other exam arcs out there" and not just exclusively Hunter x Hunter like everyone else is doing, that is why I asked the question.

Deea

Hello Alex! I can't seem to find your Demon Slayer colection? Or I might be blind and totally missed it somehow 🤔.

CH

just noticed this one's missing the frieren tag, no wonder i didn't know it was posted til now lol

Anna Lena Ciplajevs

God the names in this show crack me up. I wonder what kind of person Übel is (literally bad or nauseous). This is Lügner all over again. Haven’t watched ahead btw so no spoiler
