The reason why they kill rather than just drink and erase their memories, is because the sister is the only one who can do that, and they dont even know how or why; that's why the dad was like "I dont have it, your mom doesnt have it, not your twin".

i feel like the mild cheesiness was an intentional nod to buffy. buffy is super cheesy, campy, and over the top in so many ways. I also feel like most vampire anything is cheesy by default, particularly the stuff i grew up with. Like, Queen of the Damned and Interview with a Vampire, Buffy, that one episode of Xena where Gabby becomes a sexy lesbian vampire and Xena has to join her sexy vamp nest to save her...those were all hella cheesy. And that was following pulp lesbian vampire b-movies and a gazillian cheesy dracula interpretations. Can it really be considered quality vampire media if it's not cheesy, campy, and angsty? I don't understand ppl who go into this a literal lesbian vampire series and *not* expecting some level of ridiculousness. It's a hallmark of genre, lol. Show me a vamp movie or show that takes itself seriously and I'll show you how quickly I can claw my own eyes out from boredom. I'm glad you're enjoying it as much as I am! At this point in the show, I feel like the older sister is saying all the right stuff, but her whole vibe doesn't match her words, which is super creepy and makes her seem kinda psychopathic. Like, she can just feed without killing, but she has all those trophy licenses...that is.... concerning. The first kill is obviously important, but I get the impression from here that it's the only super necessary one. Like, after that they don't *have* to kill to feed.
