For all she hated the transformations, Chloe was glad she’d never had to become anything really disgusting.  Despite having become any number of things she originally was afraid of, in the end, none had been so revolting that she couldn’t stand herself afterwards.  She’d endured being plants, snakes, spiders and even a motorcycle.  All had been tolerated in the knowledge that the sun would set and she’d return to normal.

The cold wind started with Chloe kneeling over a bunch of weeds in the vegetable garden.  It had been a wonderfully warm day, one that Chloe had been looking forward to.  Sighing, she wondered what the change would be today.  She quickly stripped having had clothing ruined by transformations in the past. After ten minutes of sitting on the ground, she couldn’t see or feel the beginnings of anything new or different.  This was definitely odd.  All transformations had begun immediately and the wind was still blowing.

She decided to get into a more comfortable position only to discover the portion of her body in contact with the ground was now solidly connected by a mass of white threads.  She began to feel a sensation of everything around her that was alive - the fruit trees, the vegetables, even the grass.  The strange white threads spread up her body and it almost appeared she was melting into the ground.  Her head was the last to be absorbed by the threads.  She felt her sight and hearing fade as the strange threads transformed her.

Thirty minutes after the strange transformation had begin, Chloe had vanished.  Or so it appeared.  Chloe could now feel plant life over a huge area.  How could she still feel anything when she’d dissolved into the earth?  Every plant within a hundred meters was now part of her web.  She could feel the nutrients and water flowing along her threads towards the plants and feel the return of life-giving sugars.  What a strange world lay under the surface of plant life all about the house and garden!  Though she couldn’t move in a normal sense, she could feel her threads slowly spread away from her centre, making contact with other fungal threads.

After several hours, Chloe began to tire of merely feeling the life of the plants.  It wasn’t terribly exciting really.  She felt an urge to come back to the centre of herself.  It took many minutes but eventually, Chloe felt she was somehow concentrated back where she’d first started the strange transformation.  She felt the need to push up and out.  At first nothing much seemed to happen but after many long minutes, she felt a portion of herself push out into the warmth and light above.  This continued to grow until it was a stalk about as big around as Chloe’s waist and maybe 150 centimetres high.  Chloe felt her lower body flare outwards into a huge mushroom cap.  While the cap opened, she herself continued to grow upward.  Soon her head reappeared followed by her body and arms.

Discovering sight and hearing again after hours underground she looked about only to discover she was not free.  Instead, she was attached at her hips to the largest mushroom she could imagine.  She was still part of that underground world, too.  Her threads still made contact with all of the plants around her but now she could see and hear and, to some extent, even move a bit.  Her upper body allowed her to turn slightly to see the world around her.

When her husband returned, he spent a long time searching for her before finding her in the garden.  Once again, he had no explanation but stayed with her was the day slowly ended and the sun set.  Chloe felt her threads retreat as the sun’s light faded until she was able to sense only a few meters about her.  Finally, the mushroom cap folded, fusing with the stalk, which divided to form her legs again.  Her husband helped her up and handed her the clothes she’d taken off when the strange day had begin.
