Marnie grew up in a house with all kinds of strange objects.  Many looked like they'd spent years underwater.  Every month at the full moon, when she was asleep (or supposed to be asleep), her mother would vanish for the entire night.

Once again, it was the full moon.  Instead of staying in bed, she snuck out as the moon was nearing its highest.  Though most of the items on the shelves were nearly invisible in the dark, one was glowing with a faint blue light.  Getting a chair, she took the glowing mermaid statue down.  Sitting on the floor she held the glowing object and wondered how it could glow and why it was glowing.

As the moon climbed to its zenith, she didn't notice or feel the changes the statue was making.  Not until the moon was at its highest point did the the thrall of the statue release her.  Looking down, she discovered she now had a bright silvery tail.  It was hard getting back to bed with a tail instead of legs.

The next morning, her mother returned and very quickly discovered the missing statue.  After a quick search, she discovered her daughter still clutching the statue in bed with a fish tail.  Taking the statue carefully to avoid waking her, she shook her head smiling.  After a few minutes, her daughter had returned to her human form.

"Oh my dear," the mother mused.  "You aren't ready for the sea just yet."
