Five hours ago, they'd been enjoying each other's company at a campfire in the deep woods.  Then everything changed.  At first, they thought it was some kind of aircraft flying just above the ridge line but, when it stopped and hovered, they decided it was a drone of some sort.  Unfortunately, it was neither.  The strange craft had an electric blue glow that seemed to come from the craft itself and the very air around it.  It quickly came to rest above them and both lost consciousness.

Ten minutes ago, Carl regained consciousness by the stream they'd camped by.  His head ached and there was a strange electric buzzing in his head.  He looked up and collapsed to the ground.  The craft was still there, hovering above him.  But where was Catrina?  He wondered whether he should go for help or hide or something.  He discovered the best he could do was sit, anything else was somehow forbidden by whatever field the strange craft was generating.

Then a translucent metal cylinder extruded through the hull of the craft.  One by one, a series of strange steps of similar material flew from the open belly of the craft, positioned themselves like a step and expanded laterally.  Within seconds, a series of floating steps were in place reaching from the cylinder to the ground.  As Carl watched, the tips of eight metallic legs were lowered to the top steps.  At first, Carl couldn't make out who or what it was.  But when the creature was finally stable on the steps, he realized he was facing a giant metallic spider.  Struggling to escape, he forced himself to stand and run but found he lacked the coordinate. Falling backward, his gaze left the huge metallic spider to the apparition blended with the front of the monster.

"Catrina," he croaked.  "You're different."
"Nonsense," she replied calmly, looking down at her strange new body and holding her breasts.  "I'm exactly the same as I've always been."

He discovered the best he could do was sit, by bending 90 degrees at the waist, with his hips, pelvis, and legs perpendicular to the axis of his chest, neck, and head. Anything else was somehow forbidden by whatever field the strange craft was generating, and blending his appearance so Catrina saw him differently than he saw himself. If indeed Catrina did not believe she was different in appearance, then this alien field had co-opted their appearances. Their relation to each other would make his sitting self, his Earth anatomy, Interact with a sitting version of Catrina, her Earth anatomy, even though their Avatars were not-earth driders. Catrina saw his appearance as an eight legged metallic spider, even though she saw herself as a sitting human being without metallic legs. This confusion of their auto-identity would eventually become an acceptable aspect of their beings, like growing hair, adapting to the surrogate identity of an undercover spy, or fitting into a theatrical role as if it was a second skin. Eventually Carl in time would not remember himself as sitting down, or ever having stood up as a human being. Carl’s memory of Catrina would become always having gotten along with her as an eight legged metallic spider creature. An entire portion of their previous human memories was erased and reconstructed. Carl would eventually bring himself to climb up the steps and join Catrina in the alien ship, with a new plan for their future adventures together. When they became intimate once again, their ingenuity helped them develop, learn, and appreciate positions that could not be done on just two human legs. Remembrances and dreams of who they had been, never occurred. Their family and friends on earth presumed they had traveled abroad and lost touch. After all, wasn’t it pretty common for friends and neighbors to lose touch in greater frequency these days. Whose to know the whole truth ?
