We - Auri, Iona, and myself - stopped a polite distance away from each other, the Rangers just barely outside my sphere of perception. It was close enough that we could easily hear and talk, given our System-enhanced abilities, but far away that we could have a fraction of a second to react if anyone started anything.

Not that we were planning to, but I suspected they were acting out of an abundance of caution. Iona was displaying as a level 520 [Warrior]... riding a wyvern.

Only an idiot teenager boy wouldn’t be able to tell who was a man and a woman under all the armor they were wearing. Women held themselves slightly differently, had a lower center of gravity, and just plain moved differently. The differences were subtle, but I hadn’t studied medicine for years for nothing. Three of the Rangers were women, including the [Leader], and the rest were men.

Weapons weren’t out, skills weren’t flying, but armor was on and the Rangers had their hands on their weapons. There was clearly a standard set of weapons, but one of the dudes had a golden hammer glowing with the familiar light of Radiance, and a second had an unusual segmented sword. It would be pointless for stabbing, excellent for slashing, and I mentally categorized him as a speedster. I was in a simple tunic - not that armor did much for me these days - and Iona had very deliberately left her weapons behind, only using a small part of her mallium to form the classic wings of the Valkyrie order on her head.

Of course, with a thought she could morph the rest of the mallium into armor and weapons, immediately arming and armoring herself. She was about as close to fully ready to fight as the Rangers were, and I gave a little approving internal nod at their readiness. They didn’t know she was a hair away from fully ready, but were treating her like she was anyway.

Auri was preening herself on my shoulder, trying to ‘subtly’ show off and make the Rangers look at her. She was about as subtle as a brick, with all of the dancing, hopping around, flashing her flaming wings and the like. One of the Rangers kept having her eyes dragged back to Auri’s colorful show, which was only encouraging her.

I noticed a trio of tiny mouse golems slip off the roc, and a subtle rustling of grass showed where they were going, spreading out through the field. Interesting skill! I wonder what they were for. I kept half an eye on them, sure that they didn’t know I knew about them.

“Lady Valkyrie.” The [Leader] of the group respectfully said, giving a small nod to Iona. “I hope you understand why we’ve intercepted you.”

Iona gave a big smile, holding her hands out to her side. It was probably more the symbology of it than anything, but I was rapidly getting out of my people person nuance depth.

“Naturally! Big flying armored wyvern, not flying any banner known to you, of course you’d come round and ask us what was going on. As you can see, we’re more than happy to cooperate.”

The leader nodded.

“Aye. Can you tell us about why you’re here? We don’t have the usual issues mortal lands have with monsters and bandits. If you’ve gotten a cry for aid, please, let us know and we’ll be happy to handle it.”

I was just so curious! I took a little step forward so the Rangers would be inside [The World Around Me], letting me get exact details and information about them.

“Crimson eyes.” The [Artisan] said from the back of the formation. The [Leader’s] head snapped to me, along with two of the other Rangers. She immediately became officious and commanding.

“Miss, I’m going to have to ask you to take a step back.” She ordered. Iona shot me a glare over her shoulder, and I meekly stepped back.

Had the [Artisan] somehow known what I was doing? Nothing else made sense. Auri flew from one shoulder to the other, still showing off for the one Ranger tracking her. I caught a few flickers behind the Rangers' helmets, Auri temporarily distracting a few more of them.

“Sorry, my friend’s a little starstruck.” Iona chuckled, and for the life of me, I couldn’t tell if it was a real chuckle, or a fake one. “As for what we’re doing here, well, immigrating I suppose. Looking to move to Sanguino and find work. I’m Iona, she goes by Dawn, and this is Auri. Fenrir’s my companion back there. We recently graduated from the School of Sorcery and Spellcraft, and I’m not sure if you’ve heard, but the Order Valkyrie was recently made, ah, more nomadic than we’ve been in the past. Dawn’s School advisor is from Exterreri, and when she’s not hiding her level she’s a little less than welcome in mortal lands.”

Iona’s pointed words reminded me that I was still wearing both my amulet and my Deception Ring.

“Whoops! Hang on!” I took the amulet off - it only had one setting in the end - while mentally fiddling with my Deception Ring to fix my level. It was still hidden, I didn’t see any sense in letting them know I had two ways of playing with my level.

“Ahhh, yes, that would do it.” The [Leader] said while the [Healer] in the background nodded understandingly. “Elaines.”

I almost flinched at my name, before remembering for the umpteenth time that it was now the word for healer. Something about the whole situation had me jumpy and nervous, like I was a teenager on a date again.

“I’m Livia, pleasure to meet you.” She stepped forward, extending her hand, and Iona stepped forward to meet her. Which also brought her into range of [The World Around Me]! There were… sadly no deeply interesting secrets in the armor, but it was interesting to see how much arcanite and how many gems were woven into her gear. Quite a bit more than we’d gotten back in my days as a Ranger! Her gear was also packed with runes, although I wasn’t familiar with the language. More enhancements and powerups!

Maybe if I had specialized runes and gear armor would be useful for me again. Something to look into when my finances were in a better spot. Armor was expensive. Enchanted armor?

Ooof.

Oh no, I was turning into a grumpy old woman. Good for them! Good for the current Rangers! Having better gear and a higher survival rate was good! They even had a roc to fly around on and transport their gear! Much better than a wagon and some horses.

They still better have the Hell Months or something like that. Weed out the people not committed enough. Humph!

“It’s always a delight to meet the famous Rangers in the flesh.” Iona warmly said, happily shaking Livia’s hand.

“Also, forgive me, but ‘goes by Dawn’? Is that not her real name?” Livia asked. We were using the Creation word for Dawn, and this was one place where people might recognize it as a Creation word, and not just a name. Then again, names and words from other languages overlapped all the time so they might just chalk it up as a coincidence.

Iona glanced over her shoulder at me, and I gave her a tiny nod.

“Nope. She’s got one of those unfortunate names, and goes by a nickname.”

“Ahhh, yeah one of those. If you don’t mind…?”

“Elaine.” Iona answered, and thanks to [The World Around Me], I could see the puzzled look on her face slowly morph to understanding.

“Elai- OH! She’s got one of those names, right, yeah, I see what you mean. Any family name or cognomen or anything?”

I shook my head.

“Nope. Closest thing I’ve got is Dawn.”

The [Artisan] coughed loudly. I wasn’t sure if he was trying to send another coded signal, or was really just trying to get some phlegm out.

Probably just phlegm. His crimson eyes earlier clearly told us that they had a way of signaling each other, and weren’t afraid to use it in public.

“Elaine, Elaine… recently graduated from the School…” Livia was clearly thinking about something, but I had no idea what. “This is going to sound completely random, but you’ve never claimed to be a Sentinel, have you?”

That question was out of the blue.

“I’ve never claimed to be a Sentinel of Exterreri, no, but I’ve held a similar title in the past, in a completely different country and language. Exterreri doesn’t have a monopoly on the word, does it?” I ended up sounding maybe a little defensive there.

I could see behind Livia’s mask, and she wasn’t looking pleased.

“Well, no, but-”

The [Artisan] interrupted. Was Livia really the boss here?

“Sundown. Claws in.” He barked out, and the Rangers stiffened. Hands reflexively went to weapons on the first command, runes started to flare to life, then, like it was physically costing them, they all dropped away. Livia’s face went through a whole gauntlet of emotions, before settling on a smooth blankness. Even more interesting, she had no way of knowing I could see her, that was simply her natural reaction.

“Excuse us. I need to talk with my team.”

The Rangers quickly huddled up, flashing elaborate hand signals to each other. Another thing that had changed - the hand language was nothing like I’d seen before, unless their sudden conversation was about Formorian mages running the Senate.

Auri took it as a challenge. She fluttered around more, creating tiny little puffs of flame in dozens of different colors.

“What’s all that about?” I asked Iona quietly. I had no illusions that they couldn’t hear us, but it was more about having a polite volume of voice. Nobody wanted people shouting next to their ear, not when they were trying to have a private conversation.

“I honestly have no idea.” Iona shook her head like she couldn’t believe it. “Only thing I got was claws in suggests they very much want to avoid any sort of physical confrontation.”

We stared at them, and at one point three of them quickly turned to look at us, before a round of head-smacking from Livia got them to pay attention again.

They finally came to some sort of consensus, and approached us again. I let Iona take the lead.

“Auri. Lady Valkyrie. Dawn. Welcome to Exterreri. I can’t promise that no other Ranger team is going to bother you, but it’s unlikely. If you mention you spoke with Livia of Ranger Team Gale, they might leave you alone. Might. Dawn, whatever else you were previously, do not call yourself a Sentinel here. We take a dim view of such things, and I’d hate to arrest you so soon after you arrived. The title has a special meaning here.”

Iona smiled her best charming smile. I’d know, she’d used it on me often enough when she wanted something.

“We’ll do that! I have a quick question, and I apologize if it seems random. Do you know of anyone called Night associated with the Rangers? Probably not a Ranger, but tangential to the organization?”

“Night Night…” Livia clearly went deep into thought, then snapped her fingers.

My heart leapt into my throat, and I took an eager step forward.

“Yes! Our [Armorer] has twins. She named them Day and Night, should be about five or so?”

My face fell.

Iona gave a polite smile.

“I appreciate your help, but I don’t think that’s who we’re looking for. Thank you though! Good wind under your wings.”

“A steady breeze under yours.” Livia replied.

It was like they couldn’t get out of there fast enough. They efficiently, expertly climbed back onto the roc, and with a mighty, System-empowered flap of its wings, they took off. They quickly veered south, and were off like a shot.

“That wasn’t the direction they came from.” I noted out loud.

“Nope.” Iona agreed.

“And it’s heading the same way we want to.”

“Yup. Let’s take a break, something spooked them and we don’t want them to think we’re chasing them.”

It was nice just lying in the meadow with Iona and Auri, enjoying the sunshine, watching the clouds pass. Fenrir convinced us all to play a game of cards, which was hilarious. Auri thought she was sneaky with her ‘not an elvenoid’ bird beak poker face… entirely ignoring the fact that her flames got all energetic and extra-colorful anytime she had a good hand. I’d been around some cutthroat cheating with Ranger Team 4 and the Sentinels, which helped me not at all.

Iona couldn’t lie, yet somehow skillfully kept managing to play the game and stay in, claiming that she was playing us, not playing the cards. Half the hands we played she didn’t even bother looking at what she had! It was an eye-opening experience.

Yet, in spite of all that, Fenrir somehow managed to win all the chits we were playing for. I didn’t know how it happened, but his pile steadily grew while ours shrunk. The beast was a natural-born card shark… errr… card wyvern?

We didn’t spend the rest of the day there, eventually getting started again. We didn’t encounter anything interesting until the Ash cloud of Sanguino came into view, a Classer shaping it into the form of a flying bat, pulling any number of acrobatic tricks over the capital of Exterreri.

We had made it.

23k years gap, imortals getting lost in wars, there wold be expected to be a protocol for returner imortals claiming ownership of things after many years missing...

tr13ze

Thanks for the chapter 😁

Gopard

Yeah, but I imagine Night didn't ever include that for people from before a certain Time-Period. Like back then Elaine was the ONLY non-Vampire Immortal in Remus and after that Night left Remus with ALL his surviving Vampires so... Not really anyone (except Elaine) who could in any way claim a "thousand-years-old debt", at least from the Remus-Period. I imagine for the new country (I'm not sure if he called it Exterri immediatly) they included keeping records of Immortals both Vampires(citizens) and non-citizen-immortals.

Gopard

Thanks for the chapter!

Leonardo Krieck

A good point, but the 23k years was frenetic, dont think a written Record was manteined for more than 2k year and is a ressonante time for some imortal go missing and reapear

Cirvante

You think they've already gotten news of her status as the MoMM? Iona told them that they're from the School and then Elaine claimed to have been a Sentinel in the past, implying it was before Exterreri (which has been around for almost 14 millenia). Immediately afterwards, the Artificer gave the "Sundown! Claws in!" command and they politely disengaged and hurried on ahead of them. Even Iona said they had been spooked by something. Not hard to believe that Marcelle would send a high-priority message to Exterreri that somehow overtook them, mentioning that THE Elaine might come to the Empire. I kinda want an Interlude with Night's reaction to the news now.

Wizard Tim

OK so my guess is that the Artisan dude found Elaine's Platinum diploma from the School on Medicine in her bag (using robo mice) and realized something isn't adding up. Sundown was meant to be a warning, but claws in signaled non-combat. Crimson eyes is probably meant to warn threatening behavior. I think he snuck through their chest and found something incriminating. If Elaine's still had her old sentinel badge or kept her degree scroll in her luggage, those are the only things I could see this kind of reaction for.

Anonymous

Vampire skills dont work during the day so sundown probably means "active skills" or something like that

bcdp

I interpreted "Sundown" as "Fall back!", explaining their tension, and "Claws In" sounds self-explanatory - if it's not a trick. I am bemused about races/language here. While we got a lot of details about the Ranger team, no mention of races. Without thinking I read that as them being vampires. They were greeted in High Elvish, and Vampires don't expect/like others to know "their" language Creation, so I guess all conversation was in High Elvish. And there was no mention of switching languages. But why would a vampire Ranger team use signal words in High Elvish instead of Creation?

bcdp

Oh, and while the finding the diploma would be a good explanation for their hasty retreat, Elaine mentioned keeping an eye on the rats.

bcdp

Hm, if the timing is no coincidence, then they got spooked when Elaine told them that she was called Sentinel in a different country and language. Told by a possibly Immortal healer. Maybe the Artisan realized she could be a survivor and therefore Sentinel from before one of the immortal wars (last one about 900 years ago). And if smoke and mirrors is still in force (i.e. Rangers see Sentinels as superior to a whole Ranger team), then their reaction would make sense the moment they realize this could be more than an imposter case - the same as it would have been in Remus: "above our paygrade". Ah, but that idea probably fails on the fact she is no vampire.

Guilherme Paschoaletto

It does make some sense, but only as long as the Ranger/Sentinel strategy has been moving with whatever Nation that Night is working with. We are not sure how long ago the latest change happened, neither if Night kept this strategy going before the Exterreri was founded. He probably did, but who knows.

Anonymous

Searching through travelers' belongings without asking sounds like a huge invasion of privacy and I'm sure that has never caused a diplomatic incident before ever. It'd be like if Elaine read everything in the ranger's luggage because she could. Maybe it's only "we can search through their shit if they're under level 1024."

Benjamin Smith

@bcdp Vampires are the ruling class of the empire, I wouldn't expect to see one as a regular soldier, even an elite like the Rangers. I'm guessing most of the population is human unless stated otherwise.

enderman

@Leonardo Krieck They do have a protocol for it. It’s just Jacklyn skipped that to make the process “smoother”. Thats what you get when there are people doing the same job for long. They cut corners forgetting protocols are there for the one in a million chance.

enderman

I agree with you Benjamin especially since that team was sent to the mortal lands that A).doesn’t like immortals B). Will be very exposed without there ash clouds.

Tjark

To add onto adr's point. Elaine wouldn't just let him rifle through their things. She noticed the robots instantly, so it's obvious she would notice them in her own luggage.

enderman

I think they reacted to Elaine saying she was a sentinel and figured out she was the target of there mission.

enderman

I think “Crimson eyes” refers to the dragon eye moon meaning some kind of scrying skill.

Tjark

Considering she's a high level healer as you said she's a possibly Immortal healer. It would be smart to make her a non-vampire Sentinel just to increase the organization's options. Would also make sense to then call her Sentinel Dawn because she can walk in the sun/dawn.

Florian

I find it actually quite interesting that Elaine can somewhat understand the Rangers hand-signals. Even if the actual content does not make sense, it would still indicate that a) Exterreri and Remus hand-signals are structurally similar, the cause obviously being Night, and b) there has not been enough cultural drift accounting for over 23k years, indicating that there is some factor keeping it similar enough to still be understood by Elaine.

Tjark

It's possible Marcelle sent a letter explaining that the MoMM will likely be coming around to Exterreri soon. Don't think any other avenues would have gotten the info to them otherwise.

Hauke Sattler

My five cents here: "...Elaine claimed to have been a Sentinel in the past, implying it was before Exterreri" Nope. They claimed just to have held a similar title in another country in the past. Nowhere they declared that is was before Exterreri existed. In the past could just mean last week. Also we have to consider how long Vitus' letter took to get to Exterreri. "High-priority" mail may be faster but it's much more expensive.

David T

Crimson eyes probably means immortal, like an immortal vampire with crimson eyes. So be careful I think they're immortal. I agree with @Vector that sundown is active skills.

NA

I don't think anyone has mentioned the moon's yet. Seems more likely to me that everyone who's anyone will have heard rumors of the high level Valkyrie who moved the moon's during The magic school tournament a few months back. But thank goodness this lvl 512+ Valkyrie isn't traveling with the also lvl 512+ healer like the rumors OH NO SHE WAS HIDING HER LEVEL!

NA

Maybe this is a fun vampire vs werewolf-plague-in-the-making subplot

Louis Nel

That's a good point. There is no way language stays stable that long without a strong hand firmly enforcing it. She doesn't understand because it's coded, they're using the familiar hand signals but speaking in code phrases. That should be a huge clue to her that Night is involved.

Olly

The two Rangers from the epilogue were Decimus and Livia, so this is the roving Ranger team that was sent to the school and had to give up on retrieving Elaine. Piecing out the code words they use seems interesting! Crimson eyes is probably a reference to the dragoneye moons meaning observation of some kind, though the Rangers immediately identified Elaine as the source. The "Formorian mage in the Senate" probably actually means "enemy mage in/going to the capital" which would definitely be Elaine. So now they know their target is voluntarily going where they were ordered to take them, the team is probably going before them to contact HQ and get guidance on what action to take when they arrive.

Cirvante

Marcelle is a Biomancer at the School of Spellcraft and Sorcery. She most certainly has the funds to send a priority message to Exterreri. And as Elaine's student advisor and the one who discovered her true identity as the MoMM, she has plenty of motivation to warn the Empire of Elaine's eventual arrival, which she has somewhat orchestrated. And while Elaine hasn't outright stated that she's from Remus, there probably isn't another country with Sentinels. The Rangers knew that she was the "fake" Sentinel based on her name and claimed title. If they had heard about the MoMM from Marcelle, they could have identified her based on what she said. Rangers are most likely told that their prestigious organisation goes all the way back to the mighty Empire of Remus. And a living legend from that era just showed up. At the School. From which these two just graduated. And one of them is a Healer and claims to have been a Sentinel in the past. But not one of Exterreri. So perhaps the Artisan connected the dots.

bcdp

Good point, but if they heard of MoMM, too, wouldn't they have rather asked if she has a platinum grade instead of if she had claimed to be a Sentinel? That is, asking about her achievement, not her (possible) crime, to not alienate your VIP without need?

bcdp

@Benjamin I considered the option that they are not vampires. But that also leaves me confused: Why would Elaine go into detail about everything but their race, i.e. either noting that rangers nowadays include non-humans, or that they still don't.

bcdp

Well, but the rangers didn't stiffen when she told them. They stiffened after the Artisan barked commands. Livia, the one asking the question, and therefore definitely knowing about the warrant, only went through the emotions after the Artisan's call.

Wizard Tim

Exterrari is known as a human nation, with vampires watching over them and essentially guarding them. In other words, she didn't consider their race to be unusual, so likely just humans.

Wizard Tim

That's a good point. However I don't see a reason for calling it. If he could detect active skills then he could likely identify them, and I doubt either Elaine or Iona had any active skills that were hostile or note worthy. I'm sticking to my gut that, whatever "Sundown" means, he used the signal followed by "Claws in" more as a means to get his leader's attention and report his own findings. Another note is that while the Ranger team were talking, a few kept glancing at Elaine until Livia knocked their heads. Livia was also very easy going with her attitude, even after realizing Elaine was their mission (Yeah, I'm pretty certain this is the same team). They also made the entire display way too obvious. So I doubt they're gearing up to "go hard" or call a Sentinel. I think the Artisan may have figured out who Elaine really is. Maybe he's got a [Historian] class in there as well, since he's clearly the team's Utility.

Wizard Tim

I don't think those were orders. Code words and warnings, but not orders. I think you're right that the Artisan has Elaine pegged as more than an imposter. I think he spoke those code words to get Livia's attention to report what his thoughts are. He obviously wasn't concerned about putting Iona and Elaine on edge despite knowing exactly how his team would react to "Sundown". And "Claws in" made it clear he didn't see a threat.

H

I’m enjoying this but , as tripod once said, get to the fucking monkey

bcdp

I meant command like a soldier seing a grenade calling "get down". It's not an order, but neither a mere warning. Don't know if there is a better word.

Jeanean

I'm pretty sure that its just a case of there being only so many different hand signs one can make.

Hauke Sattler

@Cirvante My guess is that the problem is the good old 'need to know' issue. Probably the warrant for a wannabe Sentinel Healer named Elaine is common knowledge around the Rangers, or at least to most squad commanders. The news of the resurfacing of -'THE ELAINE', -'the Mother of Modern Medicine', -'The Lost Sister In Arms of THE PROGENITOR' is PRIVILEGED INFORMATION only known to a select few. So I'm guessing that the Artisan is not a regular member of the Ranger squad and probably higher ranked than the commander. But probably not a Sentinel himself, or least below the pay grade to handle the ancient friend of you Bosses' Bosses' ... Boss Finally maybe the Bat Signal meant to all important people :"Come there!!! Something important very is happening!!!"

Cirvante

I think "Sundown!" is more of a general warning. Elaine noted that they all reached for their weapons at the first command, then forced themselves to let go at hearing "Claws in!" It would make sense for 'sundown' to mean 'danger' in Exterreri, because that's when the scary vampires come out to play. The Artisan was most likely their intelligence expert and authorized to give commands to the squad when necessary. "Crimson eyes!" most likely means 'active surveilance skill', since he only gave the warning when Elaine stepped forward to reach them with her skill. He also cleared his throat to remind the leader that 'Elaine' and 'Dawn' both indicate their target for the false Sentinel mission. She started digging and then Elaine's claim that she held the title in the past, in a different country and in a different language spooked him. It would make the most sense if he had somehow gotten wind of her reveal as the MoMM upon graduating. He'd have gone "Hold on, could she be THE Elaine from the School? She'd have been a Sentinel in Remus, long before the foundation of Exterreri and spoken Creation. Oh shit, we've got ourselves a VVIP! Fall back! Abort!" The way they just gave her a warning not to claim the Sentinel title and told them to mention that they already spoke to Ranger Team Gale indicates that they just wanted them to stay out of trouble and arrive at Sanguino unmolested. Without knowing of the MoMM, the Artisan's reaction wouldn't make much sense.

Wizard Tim

Doubtful. The only word with any reason to reference something in that sentence is "mage". Chances are "fomorian" was refurbished since they're very very extinct. And I doubt Exterrari has a Senate. I'm guessing Night rules as a benevolent dictator given how obviously fed up with human short sightedness he got.

Olly

I figure the meaning of words has drifted over time. Just like Elaine has come to mean healer instead of one specific healer, I am proposing that in the hand language used, the old signal for Formorian has come to mean a nonspecific enemy, and the old signal for Senate has come to mean an important central location.

Wizard Tim

I have trouble accepting that Crimson Eyes means surveillance. Elaine's perception is entirely passive, and [The World Around Me] only organizes the information her senses pick up to give her blind sight. Frankly, it's impossible to detect passive perception. And I'm not convinced the system's voodoo can just do it for you. Meaning Vampires about to do violent things tend to let their eyes go Crimson. And Livia apparently didn't know Elaine could see every facial expression she made.

Wizard Tim

Maybe, but it could just as easily be referring to Night himself.

Cirvante

[The World Around Me] is a skill that can be toggled on and off. She has also mentioned that it's a magical skill that gives her perception far beyond her natural senses. But more importantly, the Artisan only gives the warning as she steps forward to put them into the range of her skill. He could have any number of skills, gems or enchantments to detect surveilance skills, both active and passive ones. They also didn't treat her as hostile, but rather told her to step back. That's not the reaction she would have gotten if "Crimson eyes!" meant hostility. Not like the warning "Sundown!", which made all the Rangers get ready to attack them. It's pretty obvious that the Artisan's warning was linked to her skill range and by extension her skill. And the warning doesn't have to be a reference to vampire eyes, there's two very big, crimson eyes in the sky afterall. Always watching.

The Uub

Different theory here. There was mention of an Hero named "Nightmare" and that is Nights current status. It reflects his age and probable power level, is an actual extension of his name, and still let's him continue in the self imposed position of the "guardian of humanity" which formed his first 5000 years thought process. As a hero, he ca guide his people and continue to be a deterrent to threats against humanity. The Fomorian reference you propose could stand. I see no reason to counter the theory at this point and it is a plausible reason for the Ranger team to hare off and report to Jacklyn or her underlings.

Wizard Tim

It's not that it means "hostility", just "threatening action" or notable action. Calling attention to something unusual. General Skills aren't really magic (as not magic as any skill is). They're enhancing skills. It's also not an aura skill, it's a processing skill. It just processes the data her senses pick up. And "passive" in this sense doesn't mean it can't be turned off. In perception, passive means the sense uses natural feed back. Your eyes are passive senses, they process light that travels into them. No light, no seeing things. Echo location is an active sense, it usually requires the animal to click or make some other baseline noise and hears the echos as the sound bounces off objects and returns to the source. Anything that's keyed into hearing those sounds can easily find whatever is making them since they're broadcasting noise to sense things with. Elaine just has super senses though. No radar or echo location, no feedback from her to detect. And her skill just processes that information far more effectively than her brain can. There's also no real need to be concerned about a surveillance skill. There IS some concern over her repositioning herself though, and him spotting that and calling attention to it is equally far more understandable than someone concerned about being undressed by her eyes. He's also calling attention to it for the entire team, not just Livia. The fact they stopped just outside her range is probably just coincidence. Since I suspect they're well within her healing aura range. And she knew that the robot mice were running around, no special response for that either. Like I said, I doubt "Crimson eyes" is anything other than calling attention to some notable movement, especially movement designed to be subtle and thus suspicious.

SelkieMyth

Sorry - the hand signals were supposed to be utter nonsense, AKA they're using a completely different set of signals. Some things are the same, but some things re completely different. "Burro" is "butter" in Italian, but "Donkey" in Spanish. "Auge" is "Bowl" in French but "acme" in Spanish. Similarly, the hand code is wildly different. There are only so many hand motions that work in short, curt form, and there's overlap. Elaine was observing how they didn't make sense with the overlap, and they're actually saying something COMPLETELY different

Quentin Long

Possibly interesting trivia: Among linguists, there's a term-of-art for "same sequence of letters, different meaning in different languages". They call it a <i>false friend</i>. My favorite example is "gift", which means "something you give to someone else" in English… and "poison" in German.

Eifer

Poison in Danish as well. But, it's also marriage.

Sam Redwine

The prior chapter says, "It was clear that at least two of the Rangers were women, but I couldn’t tell anything about the ones who’d already finished getting their gear on." While this chapter says, "Only an idiot teenager boy wouldn’t be able to tell who was a man and a woman under all the armor they were wearing."
