It’s been ages since I did a worldbuilding thing! This one has to do with “Natural Affinities”, as I’m calling it.

In short, species as a whole can have one or more affinities, with varying degrees of strength. If a species has that affinity, they’re pulled as a whole to have that element as their first class. The stronger the affinity, the stronger the pull, the greater the likelihood that they’ll end up with that element.

The best, easiest example of this are elementals. A water elemental will always have the Water element. A fire elemental will always be Fire. Storm is Storm. Etc.

Elementals are so strongly pulled towards their element that they can’t get anything else. No lightning bolts from water elementals!

If you’re not quite following, some examples should help.

Slimes are strongly Ooze-aligned. It’s the rare slime that doesn’t have at least one Ooze element.

Fish are moderately Water-aligned. It’s the rare fish that doesn’t have at least one Water or Water-related element. A natural extension of this - most things that live in the water have a Water-aligned element.

Birds are moderately Wind-aligned. See fish.

Hydras are strongly Verdant-aligned. Without the element, they don’t get access to their classical power of head regeneration and head-splitting when they lose one.

Pigs are Fire-aligned. See bacon, Iona, and Journey of Black and Red.

Trolls are extra-strongly Light-aligned. It’s where their crazy regeneration comes from. Also why White Dove gave them such a powerful curse - it amused her that the second strongest Light-aligned creatures couldn’t be exposed to the sun.

Humans and Elves are both neutral. They’re not pulled towards any element.

Kitsune are moderately Mirage-aligned. Not that they’ll admit it.

Sirens are strongly Sound-aligned. They’d love to tell you all about it.

Goblins are very weakly Fire-aligned. Short, explosive lives. They don’t get Fire classes that much more often than neutrally-aligned races, but there’s a small effect.

Thunderbirds are strongly Lightning-aligned, with a moderate pull towards Wind-aligned elements, and a weak pull towards Sound.

Giants are pulled in a dozen different directions, depending on the type of giant. Storm, Ice, Earth,  [REDACTED], [REDACTED],and [REDACTED], among others!

Liches are modestly pulled towards Gemstone. That’s because [REDACTED]!

Vampires are strongly pulled towards blood, which can be in some, but not all, of the Water-aligned elements.

Ents and Dryads are strongly pulled towards Wood-aligned elements, generally Forest.

Demons are weakly Dark-aligned. It’s just a bit shady.

Sandwyrms are… Sand-aligned. I’m sure nobody saw that one coming.

That’s basically the idea. What element(s) are races naturally pulled towards, and that they’ll likely pick up for their first - or more! class.

Comments

Lion Heart

So trolls are the second strongest light aligned creatures, are the strongest just light elementals?

Benjamin Smith

Is being neutral as special as it seems from this? Or are there a bunch and humans and elves are just the two most notable for story purposes?

SelkieMyth

They were easy examples that had occurred in-story. There's nothing really special about being aligned to an element. It just means you're likely to pick it up

Fervent Fiend

Are there any species aligned with the more sinister and dangerous elements like void or miasma?

SelkieMyth

Yes, because inherently, there's nothing wrong with the element. They're a tool. Venomous snakes are often Poison-aligned.

Obran

Monsters under the bed have a strong pull towards bed affinity and a weak pull towards ankle affinity

Obran

Unless that monster under the bed happens to be my pet rabbit Dortmund. In which case he has a high pull towards hiding, pooping, and sleeping

Joshua Little

Thanks for the chapter.

Khanalas

What about the dwarves? It's very interesting with their conflicting clans, is it dual, based on heritage, or neutral?
