Keeping things vague about their past is one of Oda's wisest choices here. You don't need to see it to know how much torment they might've gone through, and of what kind. And you might be better off not knowing: when there's absolute power behind, there's no limit to human perversion. On another note, Margaret mentioned a few episodes ago that only the strongest go on their pirate ship, so you can gather they were already fairly strong, even as kids. As to why they'd abduct them, I can only guess they were valued because they were "exotic" for their Kuja culture.

I think part of what Oda is trying to potray throughout the series is looking at the individual for who he/she is and that's what luffy always does. Luffy doesn't care about what your background, status, past or connections are. Luffy sees you for who you are in the moment through his eyes. There are bad pirates, there are good pirates. There are bad marines, there are good marines. The very definition of good and bad/evil is a grey area anyway.

I don't think the subtitles say it right here when talking about the Sun Pirates branding. I think I saw the DUB first which said it better. They simply branded everyone on the crew, even those who weren't slaves, so that it was impossible to tell who was and who wasn't. A detail that I really love :)

I agree, navy (most) tries to be good but working for the biggest evil surely takes a toll. Of course there are always bad apples but in general, the navy is a positive force, sadly they work for the devil themselves. Garp, sengoku etc have brainwashed themselves and the future generation of marines that this is somehow the lesser evil, and this idea keeps getting passed on in the marines for some reason.

We don't know much about Sengoku yet to make many assumptions. A bit more about Garp, though. In any case, saying they have brainwashed themselves is a far too simple justification for their affiliation to the WG, as well as a mockery to their characters' depth. As of now, the way I see it, even if some good marines are aware or mostly aware of the WG wrongdoings, they still work for them because the alternative is seemingly worse: anarchy and chaos all over the world. So, if they must choose between two evils, they'd rather side with whom they believe to be the lesser of two evils, while trying to do the right thing whenever they have the chance.

Yeah the comment above forgets that the world also moves outside of the characters we see. The majority of pirates are still of the pillaging, raping and killing kind, not to mention other various kinds of criminals out there in the world. The vast majority of the marines out there are still doing their job of preventing crime, catching criminals and maintaining some sort of order to society. The people at the top are evil, yes, but what is any individual to do? People have to earn a living and if you can earn a living while wanting to fight for some sort of justice then that's the best option. If one's desire is to root out the source of evil at the top they become revolutionaries, as we've seen with Dragon and the rest.

Koby is a good example. He and Helmeppo talked about how fucked the gov was after Water 7 and how they were going to be better and change it from the inside. Though, 2 people can't exactly change the entire corrupt system

Another example of what I often say about One Piece: it may look goofy and shun away from showing anything gruesome, but some of the themes that run through the storylines are darker than many shows with way more blood.

as a one-piece fan, i feel shame. it didn't click that well in my mind until i read someone mention it last month. yeah, Vivi taught luffy to bow in drum island when we are owned to someone and getting help.
