hi!

here's a quick video on how I usually go about making house drops

this is a 30min uncut video because I thought I should show the whole process, but to sort of break it down in words,

0. I start by programming the drums to get a groove going

1. make a progression with a bass as the foundation

-> I've tried various approaches when writing progressions, such as starting with piano, guitar etc., but starting with a bass works best for me, probably because:

i. leaving the mid-high frequencies empty means there's a lot more space to experiment

ii. from a non-pianist perspective, writing a progression with a bass is much easier and less time-consuming which keeps me in the flow

2. start layering sounds, preferably with audio samples

-> once again, I try to avoid midi programming stuff at this point because I am more focused on trying to grasp the outlines of the song, rather than 'painting the details' (if that makes sense)

3. experiment!! (as you may already know, I love resampling my own sounds/music)

-> sampling breaks habits, and it's FUN

4. record stuff as necessary

-> for this kinda music I like throwing in some plucky guitars, wurlis and pianos

this video demonstrates me playing guitar

5. refining / brushing up

-> once I think I get a cool idea, I take a break for about an hour or so, then come back with critical ears, and take out/ add stuff ( I usually add too much stuff at the start so at this stage so it's more about subtracting)

so yea I hope this is interesting and somewhat useful, enjoy!
