Just a note -- this column runs through the first week of April, after which we will return to all our normally scheduled content! I've never had to publish twice a week before and it's really taking a lot out of me.

Single-Stair Layouts Are Not Going to Fix the Housing Crisis

If you've been around architecture and urbanism circles for the last few years, you might have heard about something called "single-stair" layouts. While not a new concept (it's been present in European multifamily buildings for a very long time), single-stair apartment buildings have, like upzoning before it, become the latest concept to gain "it will fix our cities" panacea status among a certain type of pragmatic liberal urban pundit.

So you're saying we can't fix housing by writing articles on Medium and instead need to build houses for people to live in, as opposed to investment/tax evasion/money laundering tools? Really, now you've gone off the rails ;) Keep it up, I'm totally enjoying this! This was written in an European Single Stair - didn't even know that this was this big of an issue in other places, your columns really add to my education.
