Link to Listing.

Since our Bad House of 1973 was a mansard, I thought I'd do it justice by posting a Good House that was also Mansard-esque (technically the roof is a mansard, but the house doesn't have the 70s mansard aesthetic). Personally, at $200,000 and 3 bedroom/1.5 bathrooms, I think this little house is deeply cute. I love how, even though it has a front facing garage, it's delineated from the rest of the house via the exaggeration of the mansard roofline as a focal point - the eye doesn't go right to the garage (which has a lower-pitched roof) - it goes right towards those dormers. The speckled brick veneer and general country cottage look is another throwback to the bicentennial fueled Colonial Revival Revival in the 70s. I usually loathe door shutters, but this house is so endearing I'll allow an exception.

This house has been very tastefully updated: while the decor is contemporary, the owners clearly embraced the architecture's original charm, keeping the dense brick fireplace in the  living room, the oak cabinetry in the kitchen and the oak trim throughout the house. It actually looks quite at home with the farmhouse decor which, though trendy, works well in a house built upon Colonial Revival aesthetics. Though this is a relatively small house at 1,755 square feet, it is cleverly designed to allow in a large amount of light, creating a sense of open-ness despite having a floor plan that is only semi-open.

The only thing I can make a negative comment on is the landscaping, which could use a bit more tree coverage and would be made much more vibrant by an easy to care for bed of native plants.
