Howdy folks! My new long form piece for The Baffler is now available online. It features all kinds of goodies:

- Enlightenment slap fights

- Industrial Ruins

- The Sublime (not the band)

- Superfund sites

- How we as a culture react to the aesthetics of a modernity that have destroyed our environment (you know, lighthearted stuff)

Staring at Hell | Kate Wagner

When I was an eleven-year-old child struggling with nascent mental illness, I received some perhaps ill-considered advice from one of many therapists: "Knowledge is power." The idea was that by learning more about the things I feared, I would become less scared about them. In some ways, this worked.

I didn't feel like it was! But it is a great point that knowledge is indeed power and I thought it would be a good opportunity to suggest a book for those who felt similarly and wanted to learn more about the landscape itself. It's totally valid constructive criticism

(double post b/c this is a new subj. hope that's ok) An unknown-by-"disaster porn" afficionadoes source is the CSB, which researches chemical accidents. They rightly avoid what would usually be "sensationalism" but, as that was already defined, could be termed "yellow journal-tainment". Reports from them are so operators can know what went wrong why at the other guy's plant.
