I wonder... If you had a list of all 16 McMansions and asked people to pick the worst, would Smallpox still have won? What if you'd asked people to rank them from worst to best? I think sometimes brackets can produce odd results. Smallpox was pretty tame as far as McMansions go. Or maybe the blog has made people numb to the typical McMansion shitstorm?

I think part of the issue is the criteria we use to rank “the worst.” Perhaps Smallpox won because, in addition to the usual McMansion horrors, the siding and windows look terribly troubled in a basic real estate sense, though the inside seems tame compared to other McMansions. To me, Smallpox doesn’t look like it’s too far from Kate’s slideshow of abandoned McMansions. I voted Mt Nub as I assume they are all poorly constructed, and I tend to vote based on what I presume to be the values of the builder/owners. A perfect strip of grass might not offend in the real state sense, but the values behind it are offensive (clearly waste of water in TX and not used for dogs, kids, or other wildlife that like more “natural” lawns). Also, that ridiculously high roof in Mt Nub just seems on purpose to make the house look aggressive all the while wasting vast amounts of energy to heat and cool, etc. It’s deplorable and proud of it, the worst kind of McMansion.
