This was a really in-depth essay that took months to write and fact-check. I hope you enjoy!

Forget the Open Concept: It's Time to Bring Back Rooms

It's time to end the tyranny of open-concept interior design. If someone asked me five years ago whether or not I thought the open floor plan would still be popular, I would have said no. Domestic architecture seemed to be taking a turn toward the rustic.

A year ago, my family of six moved from 4000 square feet to a 100 year old cabin of 590 square feet. I was excited to watch Tiny House shows and get ideas for our new tiny living adventure. I quickly discovered how much wasted space was on those shows because of their commitmet to open concept. Having five distinct rooms with walls gives our house so much more useable space.

I had a teacher in the mid-aughts telling us that the open floorplan had been popular in the past but nobody wanted to have to keep their dishes washed constantly and now we liked walls again. But when actually house-hunting for myself and for relatives, it looks like at least the people who flip houses are still adamantly in the "slap it all together" camp (and they all use that stupid gray glass mosaic wall tile blend). I can't live with that; I've inherited too much furniture and it needs walls behind it. There are six desks in my living room. I need many, many walls. Can't make an island of desks. (COULD I MAKE AN ISLAND OF DESKS?)
