Really helpful post! I'm still not sure I'd get the center-gabled-versus-cross-gabled question right on the quiz, but I'll keep studying.

A question for all of you on this thread Kate observes, ". . . houses with very shallow porches (less than 4 feet) have either had the porch put on as an addition, or, more likely, the porch is decorative - a clear sign of a house built in the last 30 years. " This strikes me as a continuation of the (d)evolution of the porch in the car-dependent suburban-sprawl era. My previous house, in a 1910s Midwestern streetcar-suburb working class neighborhood, had a generously deep porch --you could easily seat four people around a table on it and dine al fresco while waving at neighbors who strolled by. The house I'm in the process of buying, in a 1960s car-commuter neighborhood in a Western city, is a ranch style with a porch only 4'8" deep--fine for lining up a few chairs in a row, but hardly an "outdoor room." Are there any good books out there that document the relation between changes in American urban/suburban domestic vernacular architecture and the rise of automobile dependency?

I have this book around here someplace (maybe even with some of my architecture books). I enjoyed it very much, but strictly speaking, I'd say it's a cultural history rather than an architectural tome. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1585746630/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1507204443&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=The+American+porch+dolan&dpPl=1&dpID=51MNSS0344L&ref=plSrch
