Im going to be starting a series of shit I'll call Free Notes.

These will be things that ive accumulated in my research to help me build up the KaE world in various ways. Some of them won't make sense, some of it will, but all of these will be present in some way in the game, minor or small.

Think ill just shoot them in clusters of five.

  • 1st edition books and scrolls are valuable and prized because no one knows how future editions may have been censored or changed by either the government or the church. Many consider the 1st edition to represent the author's intention more clearly.
  • Salt is an incredibly important commodity. Historically, one can find it being used as payment to workers and soldiers. During wartime, the price of salt skyrockets as the armies begin to stockpile the fuck outta it.
  • There's a reason why large windows, glassless or not, were so prominent back then. People quite literally could only work when the sun was out. Torches and candles light far less than you'd think. Hence why windows were used so much. Plus, candles were mostly only used by nobility or merchants.
  • Piggybacking from the above, the buildings of craftsmen usually consisted of a small house used solely for sleeping and maybe eating, and a large fence/wall/terrace that surrounded their outside workshop. Outside is where you would get the best lighting after all. Skilled craftsmen are lured into big cities if the noble creates a district for them, with security and faculties already created that could be loaned/leased out to them.
  • Sugar, unlike salt, is more of a luxury. In Nareth, sugar is mostly grown in Jelaytha, however the Kin are also in possession of smaller sugarcane plantations on their side of the Snowpeaks. Jelaythan sugar is superior however. The art of sugarcane production was carried over by the Western Kin, and is part of the reason why historically the imperial nobles and merchants in the area targeted their lands so much. Jelaythan sugarcane farming is jealously guarded by the royal family, and sugar in general is difficult to transport. Queen Khari will be using this as leverage for when she discusses diplomacy with other powers.

I leave them their sugar cane. In Argent, we'll make sugar from beet. Leverage ? What leverage ? 😏
