It used to be a tradition to do an "Encoder Showdown" every year, where encoders are "competing" in quality against another using VMAF's quality metrics. The last one happened in late 2022 and has so far been the baseline for both QSV and NVENC recommendations. It is quite a bit outdated, and I even recommend looking at other resources.

Since the release of that post, all involved parties have improved if not completely redone their encoders, resulting in vastly different toolsets being available. Particularly AMD stopped idling around, and finally got around to improving their encoder quality and toolset. Not just that, but AV1 is now possible in "faster than real time", which at the time was only possible with SVT-AV1.

So, the question is: Should I do a new Encoder Showdown?

2023-12-23 23:11:53 FWIW, the generated comparisons will come from these GPUs: - Intel A750 - NVIDIA RTX 4060 - AMD RX 7600 As AMDs and NVIDIAs prices are a reaching for the moon, these should do fine. I already own the 4060 anyway, so I only need to buy the other two. Sadly AMD still limits their low-end/mid-end series to an x8 bus, so I guess that GPU is going to end up needlessly slow. I also can try producing footage from: - Intel 12th/13th gen iGPU - NVIDIA RTX 3090 (should be the same as the 40 Series) - AMD RDNA2 (dGPU or iGPU) - AMD Vega (iGPU) but the results from these are not likely to be representative of the current generation.

out of curiosity, why not an a380 instead of the 750? (assuming we're talking just encoding capabilities and not going for any 3d/gaming/etc abilities)

2023-12-23 23:11:53 It's primarily encoding speed. More bandwidth and memory means that I can do more at the same time, or one thing much faster. Additionally the A750 was 50€ off, so I already bought it since it's a damn good deal. Sadly the AMD counterpart (7700 XT) is way too expensive compared to them, so I went with a comparable price GPU there. As for NVIDIA, I already have these GPUs anyway, since I refuse to buy anything but NVIDIA for content creation purposes - AMD and Intel are both only added pain for now.
