【引述本台外電】 Hong Kong Breaks 56-Year Asian Cup Goal Drought in Opening Defeat

In their opening match at Khalifa International Stadium, Qatar, Hong Kong's Philip Chan (陳肇鈞) ended a 56-year goal drought in the Asian Cup, although it came in a 1-3 loss to the UAE.

The last time a Hongkonger found the net in the Asian Cup was Li Kwok Keung (李國強) back in 1968 during a 1-1 draw against Taiwan.

The Group C opener was marked by numerous VAR checks for potential penalties in both halves, with Hong Kong conceding their first goal in the 34th minute following the first of these reviews.

However, Chan's goal in the fourth minute of the second half briefly leveled the game, sending the hundreds-strong contingent of Hong Kong fans into ecstasy.

The joy was short-lived, as the UAE regained the lead three minutes later when Zayed Sultan scored on his third attempt, following two consecutive saves by Hong Kong's goalkeeper, Yapp Hung Fai.

The UAE ultimately secured the victory, making it 3-1 in the 95th minute with a goal from Yahya Al Ghassani.

Despite the defeat, Hong Kong displayed resilience, tactical awareness, and organised execution in their first group match. However, there is room for improvement in physical confrontation, transition from attack to defense, and squad depth.

Off the pitch, the Hongkonger fans from all over the world provided excellent support as the "twelfth man," cheering on their team.

Hong Kong's next Group C match will be against Iran at the same Khalifa stadium on Friday, January 19, followed by the final match against Palestine next Tuesday, January 23. You can catch all the action on https://hoy.tv/, the website of a free-to-air terrestrial TV station in Hong Kong.
