Sussex woman screamed: ‘I am scared!’ 19 times in a 999 call recording played in court today

A man with no fixed address allegedly attacked his girlfriend in her East Sussex home on three different occasions within three months, a court heard today.

James Mullany, 35, pleaded not guilty in February earlier this year to three charges of assault by beating and one count of intentional strangulation. He went on trial today at Brighton Magistrates Court.

Dominic Dudkowski, prosecuting, said Mr Mullany assaulted and strangled his then-girlfriend Maeve Tyroll in Forest Row on December 19 and 21 last year. He also assaulted Aaron Mcdermott at the same address on February 13 this year.

999 call recordings played in the Brighton court today, April 25, revealed the desperate moments when Mrs Tyroll made the distress call on February 13. She cried and told the operator for at least 19 times that she was scared, as the defendant had entered her bedroom uninvited and was present on the premises.

Meanwhile, Mr Mcdermott, who is the current boyfriend and going to testify as the second witness, was there trying to “take him [the defendant] to the living room downstairs”, said Mrs Tyroll.

Mrs Tyroll informed the court that she was in an open relationship with Mr. Mullany at the time of the two earlier assaults in December last year, but she emphasised that their eight-month relationship has since ended.

The trial continues in the afternoon.
