Warrior Pitbull

The drill instructer R. Lee Ermey was an actual drill instructor in the Corps during Viet Nam. Pile's character was probably drafted into service for the war in Viet Nam. He wasn't mentally suited for duty. The 'this is my rifle, this is my gun' chant is to make sure that Marines never call their rifle a 'gun'. This was heavily stressed when I was a boot in '86. Also, you could not use words such as: me, you , him or her, them etc. You had to address each person by their rank and name even if you weren't talking directly to them. A simple conversation would be: "Sir, Private (your name) requests permission to speak to Drill Instructor Sergeant (name)." When the DI acknowledged you , then you'd say: "Sir, Private (your name) requests permission to etc. ... Good times! BTW, these are not Army or soldiers in Full Metal Jacket. They are United States Marines. There is a difference. The chanting cadence during running serves a few valuable purposes. Usually the cadence is called loud and the platoon repeats loudly. This helps them to take full deep breaths and respirate adequately. As well, it builds a sense of camaraderie and 'Esprit d' Corps'. Joker asked the chopper gunner how he could shoot women and children. When the chopper gunner says: "Easy, you just don't lead them so much." He's saying that when women and children are running, they aren't as fast as the men so, you don't have to aim in front of them with the machine gun as much as you do with a man.
