I got finished all the Monthly commitments a little early this time around and had a few days before I needed to start on that model commission I'm taking, so I decided to put that time to use by refurbing the Syandene model, similar to how I had done so with a few of the other models before. Syandene is probably my most popular character and comes up in suggestions and commissions very often, so she really needs to have a capable model, and she just didn't. The 'before' version was not only uglier but was also not up to the task mechanically. You can see in this example: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/42278208/ how her elbow joint is... like, what is that even doing? Ew. That's just one example, there were many others. She really needed some work.

This update was much more extensive than earlier ones though- I even went so far as to make some changes to the base mesh, which required redoing the fur from scratch. Pretty much a complete tear-down and rebuild.

Worth it though! Before I rendered out these example I thought I'd be saying that there isn't much of a visual difference and most of it would be mechanical, but now that I see the before/after side by side there's actually a lot of difference and damn if she don't be looking much better now. The previous version was very... chunky, for lack of a better word. The anatomy just feels kinda blobby.  New version is looking a lot more sleek. Also she got her piercings back... at some point they just disappeared. Not sure what happened but they were nowhere to be found in the file. She definitely doesn't look right without them!

This feels real good- I was starting to really hate using her model due to how out of date it was, and that just wasn't acceptable for my flagship character, heh. What do you guys think? The image I uploaded is pretty high res so you should be able to take a nice close look!

And who's due for an update next? Runolfur comes to mind... despite being a non-character that was barely used his name still pops up on occasion, so folks seem to like him. The doe could also use some touchups though.... there may be others in need too! Thoughts?

Make sure to keep archived versions of the befores so you can always compare back to the originals to see how they and your skills as well change over time. It's an invaluable reminder of growth.

I do hang on to all the versions of the models I make, typically speaking. That's how I made this before/after shot. Not sure what I'd ever use them for but it feels weird deleting them. :P

Might there be a possibility of some of these changes being applied to the customizable fox/wolf model that you sold a while back? I'd be super stoked to see that :D I'd totally be down to pay for it as a brand new / separate model from the original :)

ruaidri

I've definitely been thinking of going back and touching her up at some point. I've even learned a thing or two since making the bondage foxes so they could use a small update too. It's currently on my "to do at some point" list. :P But I won't lie, throwing money at me to make it happen will definitely help speed things up, it's a brilliant motivator, hah. I've got a model commission I'll be starting in a few days and that'll likely keep me busy around a month, but I'm down for chatting more about this after that's done if you are!

I'm surprised at how much of a difference the shortening / downsizing of her tail has on her overall appearance. I didn't think that it was "distracting" before, but all of her features seem to "pop" more now that the tail is reduced.

ruaidri

I'm starting to learn a little self control, haha. It's super tempting to go "BIG TAIL WHEEEE" when making a model but it really does look a lot better at a reasonable size. A lot more manageable to animate too. :P

Something something up syandene something something... She's looking awesome! Proportional and reasonably sized everything is usually best!

ruaidri

It's certainly not rare for things to go up Syandene, but for once that's not what this is about! ...it's about making her look better so it's more fun to see that happen, hah. Thanks man! :3

Shira Wolven

Now we have to break Syandene in!

Pojodan

She's a purrrdy. I wonder what it'd cost to have you update my cheetah model similarly?

Probably not what I should be gawking at, but I'd pay real money for a proper fur tutorial!

ruaidri

I wouldn't put all that work into the fur if I didn't want people gawking at it. :P I have a tutorial for fur here actually! https://www.patreon.com/posts/blender-fur-30751525 It's a lil' out of date, the way I handle the materials is a bit different now ( https://www.furaffinity.net/view/40231195/ ) but it'll get you 90% of the way there. Might have to make an updated one at some point!

ruaidri

I was actually already thinking of running that by you myself, probably whenever we next did a bigger project. I can think of a thing or two that might do with tweaking! So nothing, I suppose, unless you wanna move it up from "eventually" to "soonish". :P

Her fur looks soooo much more detailed! That work paid off! The facial changes look really great too, they make everything feel deeper and more... Solid, if that makes sense? Shortening her tail worked out great, in my opinion. It's tempting to make tails super big and long, when the smaller and more reserved options are easier and cleaner! Thinner legs and paws lend more to the sexy feminine aesthetic. Her hair looks -so- much more energetic now! It might have been a ton of work but as I said, I think the re-do was much worth it :3 Great work Ru!

Pojodan

Well, I definitely want another big animation from you, though there's currently no big rush! If inspiration strikes I'll be sure to say something. :3

ruaidri

It seems to be a stage all artists go through at some point, everyone starts with huge tails and eventually learns that it's not all it's cracked up to be. For some reason I had to relearn this when I jumped to 3D. x3 Thanks dude! I'm pretty pleased overall, I'm now looking forward to whenever she next pops up in an animation instead of kind of dreading it, hah.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8P1fcmQY4R0 I recently found this fur tutorial and I think it is a neat one. Of course, I would be glad to see the updated version of the Ruaidri fur tutorial, the more info the better :D
