Update is on the right!

Giving the bluejay a revamp for that recent animation gave me the urge to give another older model a similar treatment! The lizard here is a character I've always liked the design for, but her model was starting to show it's age compared to my newer ones. The face in particular was giving me some serious odo vibes for some reason. Not good!

So I picked her all apart and put her back together again but better. Of the visual changes the face is the most obvious one- that needed a lot of work. But I also made subtle tweaks everywhere. Once again there are also a lot of mechanical changes which you mostly can't see, updating how joints bend and stuff. You can see a little bit of one if you look at her elbow in the bottom pictures. Just looks a bit better when bent now- that's the sort of mechanical tweak I made quite a few of. Also a lot of usability things when it comes to rigging. Basically, she's refreshed and ready to go in the event we see her put to use in the near future.

I don't know if anyone else cares about these, but it's super satisfying for me! It's a bit like fixing a car or the like, taking something that's not working and getting it up to snuff. Feels good.

I don't know what it is but her expressions keep looking kinda sarcastic/irritated. Maybe it's the tilt of the head but all I hear conveyed is "Really?"

There's definitely some sarcastic flair as things are. The pose and expressions were not thought out well, just kinda slapped together for demonstration purposes.

Anyhow, good she's getting a revamp, my suggestion for this month involves her! :)

Ooh, I'm excited to find out! I should be putting up the post relatively soon.

i definitely like to see stuff like this on your patreon! the upgrade process is satisfying and it's fun seeing/reading about how you do some things that I'd like to learn how to do someday. i need to do the same thing with some of my models, but i use them so seldom, i don't actually know what's wrong yet lol.

For what it's worth, I don't think I did anything here you don't already know how to do; I basically just deleted all the shape keys, tweaked the base mesh, then re-made all the shape keys. Pretty simple, just grunt work. About the only thing I do that might be slightly fancy is using two shape keys for the elbows and knees- one that maxes out when the joint is around 90 degrees, and then another that -starts- at that point and maxes out with the joint is fully bent. This prevents the arm/leg from starting to squish too early and in my opinion just looks better overall. Other than that, all pretty standard stuff! Glad it's interesting though- I'll probably keep whipping up quick little before/afters like this whenever I update a model. Got a wolf boy that could use a going over, might do that in the not too distant future.

Oh wow, a huge difference, in my opinion! Even just the changes to the eyes alone completely alter the feel of the character, in a good way! I really like seeing all the behind-the-scenes nitty-gritty stuff!
