Just a quickie update to show what I've been up to. Been plucking away at the dragon model- it's been a real challenge, I had to do some massive tweaking to my rig to make it suit a feral critter (and I'm still not sure I even like what I have for it), and I experimented with a ton of different ways of adding texture to the guy, still not certain I like what I've done there either. It's been tough! Hell, I'm still making plenty of tweaks to the actual base model too, nothing here is final.

But, I'll have to set it aside for a bit to do some upcoming model commission work, so I thought I'd show where I've gotten for now. Unlike my last attempt, I don't think there's any chance this guy gets abandoned now, as he's like 80% finished. It would be silly not to do the final fixing up at this point.

Then I just have to learn how to animate something with four legs. Should be an interesting experience... but yeah, for now, here's where he gets put on hold for a bit.

The good news, since I don't think many of you are that excited by this guy yet, is what I'm making now that's causing me to have to set this guy aside in the first place. At least, it's good news if you're into big muscley well-endowed horse dudes...

Okay you know what. I said in my original comment on the suggestion/question post you made about a feral model that scales were hard and leather wings were hard and blah blah all this stuff was hard. Yet you pull it off in your first model attempt with it and are just like "eh it's alright". WHAT? Ru I... Don't really have words. I can only say to stop selling yourself short, because I mean, just look at this guy. Does it look like a Pixar animation? No, but who the hell puts that kind of expectation on a first-time try for someone who has been doing animation for all of a year without formal education in it? For a first-time try by someone who has been doing animation for all of a year without formal education in it, this is absolutely amazing. And I know I say that a lot, but every time you come out with something it just is! All the textures and modeling on the horns look amazing, the feet and tendons and talons look beautiful, the proportions and muscles of the body are spot on and feel 'strong' without being bulky. If I -had- to choose one spot to pick about it would be the wing membrane, but I know how absolute insanity that must be to look even remotely good and it still looks great, it just may need a bit more polish and rework to match the awesomeness seen in the rest of the model is all. I just can't look at it and find anything really that catches my eyes wrong. The shape and model of the head, of the body, of everything is great. Maybe a little thin around the middle (I can see just a bit of it from this angle) and the pose puts a lot of the front feet on the floor at once making the metacarpal area seem a little long (not as 'standing on the balls of the feet' like the hind legs are, they're more flat) which may need a bit of length adjustment in the forearm bones to pick them up off the floor a bit without changing his shoulder height. What else can I say? You're knocking it out of the park. Oh, and I like well endowed horses... So... I'm excited.

Hah, damn, thanks man! The wing membrane has definitely been the biggest area of struggle so far. I'm still not even sure if I like the method I used to model it- currently it's just a 2D plane, which is the easiest to animate and work with, but also blender hates it and it's been causing issues all over the place. If I make it 3D I'll have to worry about it clipping into itself and cloth simulations will be much slower, bleh. And also just the look in general has been problematic, getting light to play well with a 2d plane is tricky. Definitely, that's an area I'll be looking into as I attempt to finish this guy up. He's definitely a bit thin around the middle, but personally I kind of like that look. Going for a bit of a cheetah vibe where they get all slim in the middle, I like that. :P So yeah, definitely lots left to improve and learn on, but compared to some of my early attempts I do think it's working out. And I'm glad you're liking him so far, thanks! :3
