So in the last post where I said I had hit the limits of my ram, I guess that wasn't strictly true... I was in the high-90% range of my ram usage while trying to render him, so I assumed that was about all I would be able to get, but as I kept adding more it kept working. I kept pushing the amount of fur until I started getting 'out of memory' errors, and then dialed the setting back just a tiny bit until I could get it to work. As a result, I can just barely add fur to an entire character. Around 50% of the time when I try to render I get an out of memory error, and about 25% of the time it just straight crashes, but with a bit of persistence I got him all fluffed up.
This is obviously impractical for animation purposes until I get some more ram (bought some today and it's on the way!) but at least I've been able to finally get a real sense for how to best approach fur. I was having some real problems with hairs floating off the body or moving really strangely early on, but I'm getting it now!
There are areas here that still need some work, the longer fur on his feet isn't quite what I want, hands need some tweaking, general body fur might be a bit too short, stuff like that, but with how hard a time my computer is having rendering this guy now I think I'll just wait until the ram get here to finish him up. Still, it's nice to know that I can add fur to the fellow and make it not look too totally terrible... maybe it is possible to add actual fluff to a 3D model and not make it look horrifying after all.
So yeah, he's not perfect, but I think I'm gonna switch over to Syandene and see if I can give her some better hair, and maybe start adding some fluff. In the meantime, I hope you like the fluffy wuff. :P
