As someone who's been a DM for 20 years, I hear stories like this a lot. Laura is 100% on target. It's adversarial DMs who are very much running the game *against* the players. Some people like that, but many people don't. Session 0's help set these expectations. In my experience, and the players I have, prefer DMs who are co-operative and there to tell a story *with* the players. A DM's first job should be to make sure everyone is having a good time, and your players decide what is fun for them.
