While I've often joked about hating videogames, there are many who claim my feelings are all too sincere, and those claims have increased since I returned to writing game reviews. Of course, I love many games, but here's the rub - the ones I love are the wrong videogames.

Inspired by an amusing interaction I had in the wake of my Dead Island 2 review, I got to thinking about what is really meant when a critic is accused of hating the very medium they criticize. It's led to some interesting new perspectives on people who complain about game reviews.

The Game Reviewer Who Hates Games (The Jimquisition)

I intentionally seek out middling reviews. 7/10 = 10/10 while 10/10 = 0/10. Pretty soon the machine will catch on to my strategy and start assigning random numbers for their AI written reviews.

Faith and Valor have a good month creators. Love all that you do.

This was a good one. I glad you’re able to see beyond the weak arguments they make and recognize the insecurities behind it all. I hope making this video helped put them behind you. I for one always appreciate your game reviews. Even when we have different taste your reviews help me decide if I’ll enjoy a game even if you don’t.

What continues to baffle is that game reviewers have been, and forever always *should be* biased. The trick is figuring out their biases and going 'if they like it, I'd like it' or even 'if they hate it, I'd like it' or not. Surely this isn't a complex concept? Anyone?

Always love your reviews due to your objective view, ability to actually write well, and the fact you’re not paid by the publishers of the games to speak! Ignore the comments of those social media hive mind mouthpieces and keep being amazing!

I always enjoyed your reviews, and it's genuinely refreshing to have a critic around who is unafraid to tell their unfiltered opinion. I often disagree with it - but just as often, I don't, and it's always helpful. I am, for example, glad that there's a critic out there who dares to say that *gasp* maybe the weapon durability system in BotW WASN'T the best idea since sliced bread, but rather a bit annoying and immersion breaking (I always felt like it was unsurprising that the Hyruleans lost the war if they made all their weapons out of glass). On another note: I always noticed that there's a bit of overlap between the "all video games are art" and the "video game analysis should be objective" crowds, and that's always been the weirdest thing to me - seemingly believing that objective criticism of art is even possible. It shows that it really is all about self-validation for some.

Not having watched this video yet, the title reminded me of a different creator: https://www.patreon.com/rahdo Similarly, but conversely he has always been criticized for never disliking anything. And obviously, as is the case for you, actually taking in the content tells a different story. It requires taking in the content though, so... So many affirmation machines amongst the internet population - people see what they want to see. Anything else takes actual effort. It's so very easy for us to be on the interwebs in low-energy mode.

ExtraPunctuation and ColdTake both tackled this topic lately. I just love the cognitive dissonance needed to earnestly believe that someone can hate something and then make engaging with that thing their *livelihood*. I can't stand doing things I hate for a day, let alone for a career. I'm reminded of this scene from Ratatouille also: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrT_am3rVzM.

Putting the main content/theme aside for a moment, I have not laughed out loud so much at a Jimquisition in a long time. I'm on board with most everyone else here regarding the main topic, but the intro, outtro, and general comedy were brilliant.

Just to add a label and some follow-up reading to the phenomenon you're describing, it sounds a lot like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hostile_media_effect (which is a consequence of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Na%C3%AFve_realism_(psychology))

This is fascinating, I hadn't come across these terms before - thanks for sharing! :D

The commenter clearly didn't intend to do anything but get a reaction out. They don't care, I'd bet. It's good to have a voice of sanity and we like your reviews and support you for doing them! All mainstream reviews from companies are useless. User (audience) reviews are best imo for movies and games, but there is no guarantees you'll enjoy it even if positive reviews.
