Open world games are everywhere, and it's getting really stupid. You can tell they're happening just to follow a trend as well, since so few open world games manage to justify actually being open world.

There are blatant clues found in many of these desolate sandboxes, and we're going to talk about them and why they're making videogames rubbish.

This is exactly why I groan every time I hear open world. They were touting how big Dragon Age: Inquisition was, and I sighed. While a pretty good game, it suffered from enemy bases, find the shard/mosaics/bottles/landmarks/regions/caches/camps, and repeated fetch quest syndromes. Not to mention there was one region that was literally miles of desert with nothing in it. Just long travel times until you found a point of interest. Dear lord.

Happy belated b-day, Jim. I'll pony up with the Boglins next time, though.

Happy Birthday! There's also the push for "open world" in MMOs. I remember a decade ago when MMOs had zones and you were warned if you weren't powerful enough to deal with the baddies it had, if not barred from entering completely. And while it's neat to be able to trudge from one end of the game world to the other without a loading screen, does it actually serve a purpose? Most of the time, it doesn't. Putting zones in a game lets you tell stories key to that zone. Shorter, tighter stories that can hint at a larger arc. No we poo on the idea that an MMO should even have zones and the words "theme park" and "sandbox" have lost all meaning.

I'm very surprised a lot of developers haven't gone with what the original Deus Ex did. Scale wise the game was small but it was jam packed with stuff to do, there was a sense of urgency at the right times and plenty of time to relax and play around as well. It had more impact for me than any GTA game ever did. That design philosophy needs to come back in force over the Watch Dogs and other open world games. Oh, and Happy Birthday Jim Fucking Sterling Son. :)

Well, based on the beginning of your video, I'll wish you a happy birthday. Though I wish it was under better circumstances rather than having to deal with immature creators who are stuck in their own misguided bravado to assume everything they create is beyond criticisim. Let's not talk about the unpleasantness as you have a legal team who is more than capable of handling this little grease-fire flare up. Onto your video, I absolutely agree with your comments as it describes the issues I have with games like the Grand Theft Auto series, the Elder Scrolls Series, and the Saints Row series. As much as I may like the activies that are presented in the game, my interest in completing them wanes quickly as I know it's just going to be a more difficult version of the last task I completed. A good comparisson would be eating a bag of chips. Sure the chips taste good and you can just dive into the whole bag, but each chip is practically the same and you'll forget about it once you finish the bag as you're just eating the same thing repeatedly. I find that the Dark Souls series is excellent in it's somewhat open-world setting as there is a huge world to explore, but each part of that world is crafted to feel like it's own complete world with unique enemies, vistas, and stories. As I complete the area, I build and understanding of what it is and what each part I cross means for that area. I compare it to a box of Pot of Gold chocolates. It's all just different types of chocolate, but each piece (good or not) is unique in it's own way to allow you to remember the good and bad pieces.
