Final Fantasy VII Remake is easily one of the most anticipated games in years. Hell, it's been anticipated FOR years. Square Enix is stoking that excitement with a demo, and the demo is... quite good!

I'm not ashamed to admit I've had skepticism about this remake, mostly because I'm not keen on the modern day Square Enix. However, this demo has definitely raised my expectations. Tight combat, great animations, and a good atmosphere. Looks absolutely gorgeous too.

And then there's Jessie. Thirsty Jessie. I love Jessie.

I've adopted a very 'wait and see' attitude to this one. Demos do not a game make and years of hype has made me wary.

Yeah she definitely be thirsty. The demo surprised me too with how overall solid it was. I did have some gripes: 1. The dialogue. The English voicework is a mixed bag, but mostly I was cringing at some of the body language (especially looking at you there, Barrett). That had to be overexaggerated in the original, what with tiny blocky characters, but now it just looks painfully awkward. 2. Related to that, the writing is too close to the original. This seems like an odd criticism, I realise, but the translations in those times weren't fantastic and not all of the dialogue sounds as natural as it should in a modern game. 3. The combat was a bit micromanagement-heavy for my taste, even with just two characters, not sure how that will scale later in the game. 4. While the level design was pleasantly evocative of the original's art, the suspension of disbelief was not kicking in with me in regards to that. There's a part where you have to dodge laser walls, where you clearly could have just hopped over the fucking boxes right next to them to bypass it. Like, I could have done that, a mercenary and a group of ecoterrorists should be able to as well. 5. Agreed that the music is lacking some bite. Again, I found it solid overall, but I'm not gonna jump on it for quite a while. Still, respect for a good free demo. Hope that practise catches back on in the industry.

If you've got concerns about the combat, you might try giving the demo a second play-through. I felt like I was just button-mashing my way through without any real finesse on my first pass, but I gave it a second run and it felt a bit better.

The Demo was better each time I played it

I noticed that last fight in the video with the Scorpion Sentinel lasted quite awhile. I hope the game isn't full of damage sponges, unless the entire battle(s) take thought and strategy; otherwise it looks like a way to pad out the game. When does Cloud fight the Sterling??

It feels like the game is compensating for a lack of Hard Mode by increasing the difficulty of the Normal Mode. I played it on Easy and it felt what I expected it to feel like on Normal, and Normal feels harder in some places.

It LOOKS fun, and this demo is nice but I'm scared it'll be a big, padded out empty open world. The entire three part thing worries me. Definitely waiting for reviews on it

"You want me to validate your opinion" - Actually, I'm option 3, you're one of the few news sources I trust, so this is the first I'm hearing about a demo and it's good watching while I download it! (Also it tells me in advance what I'll think about it amirite!)
