It's wonderful that Hideo Kojima gets to do whatever he wants to do. It's equally wonderful that I can do whatever I want to do, and what I did was stop playing his game.

Death Stranding is a hassle. A slow, monotonous, fiddly, irritating hassle. It's pure indulgence, every whimsical fancy that crossed the studio's minds has been tossed in without regard for the player's time or the gameplay experience.

But hey, it has ladders!

OH MY GOD! Somebody still gives YOU advanced review copies?

I agree it's cool that Kojima got to make the game he wanted to make. Artistic impression, author vision and all that. The result is interesting in some ways, so it's a net positive for the world. I'm also likely never even touching this game, because nothing about it appeals to me. And that's OK.

Are you ever going to continue the Fahrenheit Remaster Playthrough?

Im loving it.

I agree with a lot of this Jim. I watched someone play DS for like 6 hours yesterday and I kept waiting to be interested. Hideo Kojima is a George Lucas of video games.

If that's really true, you have the patience of a God. Something tells me you would have no problem watching paint dry for a few hours. Amazing, is all I can say.

I haven't watched this because I like to go into games blind. However I hope to god you included that this is a "STRANDING" genre of game XD

What wierd is I really hated Red Dead 2, and get the comparisons, but I loved Death Stranding. I cant figure out why but I liked it. I still completely get why people wouldnt like it. Hell I dont get why I do!

I am not surprised you didn't like it given what other games you absolutely love. That isn't a slight either. Like, I loved elite dangerous and have a few hundred hours in it. I love monster Hunter world and have a few hundred hours in it. This world building is some of the best I have ever seen. You are right. It feels dead. It feels like humanity died. It feels like you don't want to be there and that is absolutely true because you don't and you shouldn't be but you are. I would say that if you love elite dangerous mixed with monster Hunter and some stealth, this is a great game. I am also used to persona 5 and mhw, both with very complex systems and yet work. Other complex systems don't work. Dealers choice on that but Japanese games do seem to go the extra mile on systems and ffx dedicated an entire 100 hour minigame just to biltzball.

I was waiting for your feedback.. But whatever, they got my money already. Starting it tonight!

I think I will wait to pick this one up, and keep playing Outer Worlds instead!

Ehhhhhhhhhhhh.... :/ I think it looks (from a purely visual standpoint that is) really good. I'm always a sucker for a blasted and somewhat Icelandic looking environment, and that image of the hjumanoid figures emerging from the mud Norman Reedus is wading through was delightfully spooky. Thematically I almost always enjoy what Kojima explores in his game, and I like the implication that Death Stranding is presenting an unique iteration of the apocalypse. If only Kojima directed TV series or films instead, if only he was a novellist, or a cinematic multimedia artist like Matthew Barney or Yael Bartana. I could probably call myself a titanic Kojima nerd and not even question my feelings towards Death Stranding. However based on what I've heard and what you've presented Jim I'm at least 95% certain I can't compel myself to playing it. Item degradation and survival mechanics alone are a prospect I can't stomach anymore.

I'm glad he did it and I'm glad for anyone that digs it. Maybe something will crop up later from the project. Maybe it's just a good test bed for what did and didn't work out. Maybe they're just establishing a world, or pushing an envelope. It's a game for someone, but that someone clearly isn't me.

Wasn't it Sony that said that they might as well send him games, as he will only get them anyway and review them?

Jim Sterling get into decent shape, and try backpacking through Yosemite. You'll find Death Stranding is the most accurate backpacking sim. Reminds me of my time walking up and down hills while trying to avoid falling over from the pack shifting. Other packs, more common with canoeing, will give you more of a sense of different types of containers impact on your balance. I think Kojima went backpacking at least once, and decided to make a game based on the experience.

I think Kojima could've used an editor to tell him "no" once in a while, if he had his way with MGS4 Snake and Otacon would've been executed and what a terrible game that would've been.

RedBedroomRecords

being an accurate sim does not automatically make it a good game though, personally I don't see any appeal in things like hiking, had enough of that shit in boy scouts. I'm perfectly content to stay at home thank you very much, i'd rather not risk getting injured out in the middle of nowhere.

Hey Jim, I was wondering if you'd been made aware of the less than great handling of asexuality in the lore in the Death Stranding, and if so, if you have any opinion on it that you'd be willing to share? Sorry if you've mentioned it elsewhere, I don't quite have the energy to keep up with everything.
