I love that you're posting your reviews as videos. I rarely have time to sit down and read game reviews these days (wife, 2 kids, full time job, developing games on my own time). Pretty awesome that I can listen to them now.

Ray Cornwall

What I took from the first video: 1. Great amazing game with elements I hadn't seen before that intrigued me 2. A crippling gameplay plug 3. Probably best to put the game on my Steam wishlist, check for a patch in the next week or so, purchase then. What I took from the second video: 1. Gameplay bug not as bad, but still annoying. 2. Jim cares about this stuff a lot, not sure what to do. My conclusion- Jim, I think you did exactly the right thing given the confines of the popular ten-point game review score. I think there's a real argument that this situation shows the limitation of the ten-point system as a mechanism for consumers; this game isn't really a 1 or an 8. It's an 8-caveat. Game companies may not want to hear that; they want me to click purchase now, and not wait for a fix. And that's for very good reason- my wishlists are full of items I really wanted to purchase at one time but later changed my mind on. But I'm pretty sure that if I can avoid the situation that Jim went through here, I'll be buying this game, and even buying it before it gets to a first price drop. It looks amazing. (Damn you, Jim, for getting me to buy video games. Between this and Pyre...)

Nagatsu Seiken

I... actually like this compromise, Jim. Especially since putting it in vid format you could adequately explain the unique circumstances surrounding the game & why you scored it the way you did. Well done.

Bryan Hinson

I really like the new video format for the review! I'm a sucker for all things Celtic, and 7-10 hours of good fun is something I'm definitely interested in. I'll have to pick this game up next pay period.

Thanks for working out the hysteria before the world blew apart. For all your hyperbole, it's hard not to respect hard work. Get some sleep.

I think you came to a good middle ground in the end. I hadn't even heard of this game so your review made me aware of it, and it made me decide that I want to buy the game but only if the devs fix that issue. Sure, I could be extra careful to grab the torch there, but them getting right on this would show me that they actually care about the game. If they ignore this then I'll know they don't stand behind their game

Big ups, Jim. When one chooses to stand tall without pretense in front of his/her peers and accept responsibility for his/her mistakes, even the moments that aren't among the proudest in that person's career can yield a net positive outcome. It says a lot about you that you took the time to release a separate review with your mea-culpa instead of just amending the original review with a few lines about how you regret the way it was conceived. I imagine that the chances of folks who'd already read that original review *actually seeing any retroactive amendments to it* probably wouldn't have been great, as I don't think it's all that common for folks to read a review multiple times. That you released this entirely separate review shows that you’re committed not only to being fair and responsible in your assessments of these games, but also to being honest and transparent with your readers/viewers.

You (and your team) are one of the few remaining “good ones” in every sense of the phrase, and I’m proud to be a supporter. Thank you!

Thx for giving the game another chance Jim.

I remember when you missed a pistol in another game. Do you need glasses Jim?

jimquisition

I am easily distracted. It's why I sometimes miss things on Jimpressions, because I'm talking. In this case, I was in full-on panic mode from the darkness and dun goofed. About the pistol though, that was a very clear case of awful visual design. A grey pistol on a grey table with misaligned pickup cues. Terrible.

jimquisition

Thanks! Yeah, I think if nothing else, video reviews help show the sincerity in one's voice, though clearly some commenters think I'm an AMAZING actor.

Jim your stuff is awesome i am getting my brand up and running spreading good works to help make people smile good luck brother !

Nah, I'm with Jim on this one. If you have an autosave feature it is the responsibility of the game, in order to be a quality product, to reset you to the latest possible point where you might succeed or be able to back track. But maybe that's because I too was stuck in that one dungeon about Final Fantasy X-2 as well.

I can't justify paying you to review games after the debacle. I hope ya win me back.

Anonymous

Why not? I'm a dev myself in a different industry, and while bugs happen, I have no expectation on my end users to tolerate mission critical bugs. Jim put up and took down a review in the middle the night after admitting it was an overreaction. No damage done beyond a bit of drama.
