Okay, okay, so I did more digging and I think this is a cover of Cho Yong-pil's song "Short Hair." There's like no information on this, but I believe that's true. AOA has a song called short hair as well that would pop up when I searched the Hangul so it confused me.

Can't watch this now, but I'm excited!!! This is propably my favorite performance of Wheein 👍

ForeverYeung

This performance really shows how steady Wheeins voice was even as a rookie. Mamamoo were consistently on Immortal Songs not that long after their debut but that doesn't really transfer to album sales some of the time. In that time of kpop, a lot of the biggest girl groups were catering towards more alluring concepts like AOA, Sistar, Girl's Day etc; outside of big 3 groups that was the trend to getting popularity. On the other end of the spectrum, groups with very cute/pure concepts were thriving like Gfriend. Mamamoo stuck in there through undeniably solid performance skills but they didn't really fall into either side. Instead they climbed in popularity steadily over the years. At the end of the day I think that they just didn't have the concepts or visuals that the Korean general public really wanted at that time. You know about how Hwasa was constantly reminded of that in their rookie days. You can get a taste of that if you watch the interview portions of their early Immortal Songs appearances. Though honestly even as someone who holds Mamamoo as my number one in kpop, I find it hard to call them underrated or underappreciated. They got their first win on a music show in 2016 and since then nearly every single comeback has had multiple wins on music shows and they were able to have multiple sold out solo concerts from 2016 onwards. It took a couple of years from debut but once the Korean general public started really acknowledging them, they've only continued to grow. They are a bit of an anomaly in that way. Nearly every girl group that doesn't belong to the one of the big 3 companies don't get to have careers like that.

There are at least another 4 performances by Wheein and Solar in this competition. I think this is the only one with English subtitles but they are all very worthwhile. My favorite is another Wheein one where she's playing a little bit butch to a femme partner. I've forgotten who it was though.

One of my Favorite performance from Qwheein !!! This episode was the first one ever of this show and yes she ended up winning. About Mamamoo they aren't underrated let's be honest cuz they are really really huge in Korea, they even are the only GG that is successfull as soloist while still being in a group, but i think personally that they are underappreciated, especially by the international Kpops fans. I think their style of music (even more in their early days), the fact that they speak only a little english and that RBW didn't promote them on a global stage make them less popular in the west. I don't like to blame RBW like everyone but on this particular point they didn't do anything. When you see a group like Dreamcatcher getting a world tour, having concert in europe and america with their little company and MMM never getting a world tour while they helped make RBW super huge (to the point where they bought OMG company). And you see they change their strategy with PK with almost every members speaking english, having subtitles almost instantly etc... But still MMM is an anomaly in the Kpop industry, i love to think that they are underrated but like ForeverYeung said: outside of the Big 3 Nobody have a carrer like MMM and even in the big 3 it's hard to make every member THAT sucessfull as a solo artist.

ForeverYeung

I'm still not really that on board for blaming RBW for Mamamoos lack of international promotion and appeal; especially the comparison to Dreamcatcher. Even though it's only a 3 year difference the landscape of smaller companies pushing their artists to an international audience wasn't really there in 2014-2015. By the time it was a feasible route, Mamamoo had already established themselves in Korea and had a strong dedicated fanbase that would push them up. You can see that in songs like AZE GAG that is basically untranslatable, both verbally and contextually, to someone that doesn't understand Korean. None of the members have made individual pushes to gain English fluency, whereas Yoohyeon in DC took it upon herself to get much better in other languages. I don't think it's anyone's fault really that Mamamoo never made a giant push to the western market. I kind of need to put an asterisk on Mamamoo being a true anomaly in kpop since the real test starts now imo. Other groups like Sistar, EXID etc had pretty successful careers but after contract renewal time there weren't anymore com backs. In both EXID and Sistars cases they are still technically together. Granted Wheein is the only one who didn't renew her exclusivity contract. If the girls still comeback as four even once a year with a big promotion then there's no denying their anomaly status. Until then though the road is a bit unclear for us fans. Here's hoping we see all four girls together for the next 2 years with strong releases!

Hmm about the struggles of mamamoo. It’s quite a difficult story to explain. But I will try my best. So first there is two kinds of recognition. National and international. We really have to split those two to really understand the road to succes of mamamoo. National: First of they were the first group of a almost broke company, but the CEO has a large network within the music industry itself. Bc of that Mamamoo debuted with a very low budget promotion and they had to do everything themselves from make-up styling, choreography, writing, the list go on. But they also got a booster bc of the many well known names that collab with them pre debut and words within the music industry about a girl group that knows how to sing. (But back than the general expectations for idol groups when it comes to singing was like really bad. Knetz views of Most of the groups was they have 1 idol that stood out from the rest and the rest couldn’t really sing). When Mamamoo debuted they were noticed and so there was some expectation within the industry themselves. But on the other hand, publicly they had 0 recognition. Their debut stage literally had 3 people. And they were all friends and family. There were 2 turning points in Mamamoo’s road to succes. 1 the immortal songs: bc of how well trained mamamoo are in the vocal department, people started to notice them. Very important to know is that the immortal songs are well received by especially the older generation. Because of mamamoo the general public shifted their expectations towards kpop groups and After each performance they got more popular. 2 is the festivals. At some point mamamoo performed 4 festivals a day. That is a mad man schedule. But bc of that students and young people started to hear the name mamamoo a lot. And started to recognise their name. They builded a name for themselves and when they released um oh ah yeh it was a festival jam. So bc of those 2 points there was a huge building of respect towards the name of mamamoo. But when you looked at sales, brand deals and such there wasn’t much movements. Hello (their first album) <100 copies sold Piano man ≈ 100 copies sold Pink funk 2k copies sold And bc of that mamamoo almost disbanded. This was mostly bc Mamamoo didn’t follow the Trend of cute concepts and didn’t fit the idol image. They were also widely ignored by people within the kpop community and tv programs. Cut out of programs, making fun of their appearance, completely ignored them al together. You get the picture. But midway um oh ah yeh and you’re the best mamamoo got a big boots bc of solars “we got married” tv program appearance and after that, the you’re the best (melting) came out and it became a huge hit. After that they slowly progressed to grow in popularity nationally. International however. Almost nobody knew about mamamoo until starry night. Their 4 season 4 colour project launched their international career. But even so there is a big problem within mamamoo when it comes to international recognition. That problem is called RBW. Rbw did the bare minimum when it comes to promoting the girls nationally. The girls builded their own name. That’s why when tv programs a reference to rbw, they always say Mamamoo’s company. They don’t even know the company name bc the name rbw wasn’t build. it was mamamoo that build themselves. National they could pull this of bc of de many festivals and hard work. But international they don’t have those same festivals and they have a big language barrier. And bc of that promotion is way more important. But up until this day rbw didn’t step up their game whatsoever. Yes mamamoo became big but that bc of themselves and themselves alone.

Oh man, I love Wheein. That's it, that's the comment.

KpopPrince

Yeah I definitely don't think they're underrated, just that it took them a little bit to get that recognition. Guess it just comes with the territory of having a smaller label. Now in kpop it's basically mandatory for you to have some form of Western expansion.

Qwarky

I don't blame RBW for not promoting MMM in the west in 2014-2015 it would have been stupid it was their first ever group but by the time of 2021 they can't even do the bare minimum and that a fact, their his such a gap between the team behind MMM, Oneus and PK. They could have at least try in 2018/2019, maybe the girls were also not interested

meow_meow

I agree, RBW could have tried way back in 2018/19. The 4S4C project could have given them a huge potential to go global. And no, I think the girls DO want to go global. All 4 of them have been very vocal about wanting to have a world tour and wanting to collab with western artists. They've mentioned it many times on vlives / interviews. I don't know what goes on in RBW, and I don't want to put all the blame on them too because I know nothing about running a business, but we're definitely seeing a difference with how Mamamoo's marketing team works compared to the newer groups. Oh and don't get me wrong, all these groups deserve the best marketing team...RBW's artists are truly a gem to kpop and deserve to be recognized. I have nothing but love for them ❤️ I'm just saying that we do notice the difference. Take for example, Mumumumuch (which is a "main" content for Mamamoo) didn't have English subs until multiple days after its release. However, I think it was on the same day OR the next day after Mumumuch's release, a "behind the scenes" content (which for me is not "main" content material since it's not like a major release or something) from another group instantly had subs. MMMTV doesn't even get that most of the time. Years ago, fans would sub MMMTV and other Mamamoo content for free because moos understand the tight budget, but you can't say that about RBW anymore now. They're even going public, so it means they do have funds lol. But still, I'm glad Mamamoo's still gaining new fans everyday. The thing with them is - we might not be as big as other fandoms, but moos stick around for a very long time. Like in business terms, the "customer loyalty" is evident in the moomoo fandom, and that's because the girls have built a really strong relationship with the fans over the years. They really feel like friends to us.
