Sometimes I end up doing a close crop like this if the rest of the pic isn't coming out so great. It's kind of a cheap tactic but I also usually end up liking the results, and it manages to salvage the good bits of a pic. I honestly can't remember if that's what I did here or not but it looks like I also experimented with some gradient shading which I don't typically utilize.
