I'll get right to the point... Cape Kabu... is being shelved! ☠️

Now I'll get right to the reasons, of which there's three.

First off, the main reason: I have failed to program the app in a way that makes it sensible to continue to add onto. This specifically goes for story mode. I have basically set up too many fundamentals/groundwork components that are incredibly difficult to add onto without massive & time consuming work-arounds, or a complete overhaul of the entire game. I am not a trained programmer so there's been a lot of learning by doing with all my projects. And to be honest, I have to take complete credit for this failure. I thought I was thinking ahead but there was a lot I failed to anticipate.

Second is that I've reached some limitations of the engine I'm using (VN Maker). It's mainly used to make VNs and even though it's a pretty powerful tool, it seems that I've reached some threshold where the VN stuff works fine but the game stuff starts to get slightly more sluggish as I add more 'game' components that push the engine further. This is again kind of my fault for building a game engine inside a VN engine.

Third is general interest. Lots of folks have given great feedback and are enjoying Cape Kabu, but I think when it comes to my work, there's more interest in things like comics/VNs than in games. And that goes for me personally too. I wanted to try to make a game that would be casual, fun, and smutty, something I myself would want to play. And I think I succeeded in some ways. But at the end of the day I am more interested in making stories than in making games. And based on polls and comments, I think most of my audience is also more interested in that, too.

So, with that, and for those reasons, I am somewhat unceremoniously, and with profuse apologies, ending the Kabu project. I hope everyone understands. It's very hard to end a project like this, suddenly and right in the middle of it. Makes me feel amateur, and also feel nervous about letting supporters down. But, it would be wise to face the reality that grinding away on Kabu for the next two months, and then facing further issues as I try to add more in the future, is not going to be fruitful or enjoyable for anybody, fans, supporters, and myself.

I will be releasing all of the art and the script for what would have been the next story mode update as a zip pack for all patrons soon.

So... what's next then? Well, various Willy bear comics and art collections will continue! But of course, there will also be a new BIG project! Want to hear about it?

It's a new VN series! It's called, simply, Willy Bear Adventures! A smutty, genre hopping VN choose your own adventure series that focuses on collecting 'bad ends'! Read all about it here!

I want to thank everyone here that played, gave feedback, support, and more. I really hope this news isn't too disappointing for many folks. But I have a lot of confidence in the upcoming project. I think it's going to be a ton of smutty fun, and hopefully that's enough to make up for any disappointment. Thank you guys so much. More fun things are coming, and your support makes it all possible! 💖

I wish you'd sell your games on Steam. I keep having issues with payments on Itch.io for some reasons.

Honestly I think the Kabu game is already super polished and fun even without the story mode, and you should be proud of yourself for that

Ultimately, I think it's for the better. It's a really great game so far, but the execution really does feel limited, without talking about the story. I don't see how this project could continue without adding more and more stuff to grind. I really do love the casual part of it, at least.

I'm sad to see it go, but I'm happy that you are working on more self-fulfilling projects! still feeling SO lucky that mogu ended up in there ❤️

WillyBearBeach

I'd like to but it's a really awkward process and I have no experience or knowledge on that kind of integration

WillyBearBeach

Yeah I think what could keep this project going is a constant infusion of more content. Unfortunately that's exactly what is so hard to add!

I loved Kabu, and I'm sad to see it go, but I'm also really excited to see you getting back into VNs. I still go back from time to time and replay all of WBB and Notes!

Not questioning your decision or anything, but based off of what programs are available, have you looked at Ren'py? Great for visual novels and when I looked under the hood to figure out what to do in the game (because I'm a dirty little cheater sometimes), the programming looked surprisingly intuitive. I have no programming experience, and my first thought was, "Wow, I could work with this." Ren'py has its own limitations as well, but it might possibly be useful to you for future projects.

I've used renpy before! We used it for WBB 1&2 and some of the Cape episodes. It's a good program but yeah it has its own really weird quirks. I switched to VN maker bc if you're just making VNs, it's an incredible tool that allows for really easy interface customization and graphic manipulation. And it has a lot of quality of life stuff, already laid out groundwork, etc. If I needed to do a little more for this next project, I would probably head back to Renpy but for this new project I think VN maker will fit just right.

It's a bummer to see, but fully understandable — some projects just don't work out. Good luck with the next one! 🙌
