Been busy with RttS book stuff and Almost Real stuff this month, sorry for slowing down on posts here. Did some quick diagrams for the avian family tree and hybridization. I need to draw the 7 viable hybrid combinations at some point, though Sirawit counts for the flightless/skimmer combo, lol. The map depicts the approximate native ranges of the species (pre-industrial age, basically)

Polar + flightless = Huge Fluff??

at the time of RttS, have they settled the whole planet? are some islands too inhospitable to live on?

Anonymous

I’m curious, why are so many of the islands uninhabited?

Jay Eaton

This is not a modern political map, basically all land (and some ocean) is inhabited by the time of modern RttS.

Jay Eaton

It's all inhabited in modern RttS, though some areas have severe hurricane problems that make tall buildings and high density lousing very dicey to construct.

Did the oceanic species go extinct naturally, or was that more skimmers-being-bastards?

Jay Eaton

I'm thinking it's more of a situation where the largest populations of oceanic avians just became skimmers and divers, and smaller populations of oceanics disappeared for historically unclear reasons, like the other members of our genus did. Gene pool assimilation is probably the main culprit.

So with the references to the “big island” as the endgoal of the grapeweed cargo and the abundance of skimmers on Vrazi’s home island suggesting it started as skimmer territory, would Vrazi’s island be one of the orange ones in the bottom right?

Jay Eaton

Im not sure the specifics, the "big island" in Airsled may also be the largest of a colonized archipelago in the southern hemisphere.
