Speaking of bug ferrets, I was developing more of the surface climate for them a while ago. Bug ferrets come from a cold planet with functionally no seasons, so there are a lot of areas that feel like snowy jungles. The lack of yearly disturbance allows the vegetation to very slowly grow dense and huge, despite the freezing temperatures. Most plants past the tropics have noticeable, permanent lean in the direction of the equator, because that's the horizon the sun is closest to. I stopped working on the bottom picture here because I realized that all of the succulents on the ice field would have such an extreme lean that it would make more sense for them to be chair-shaped structures casting long shadows, not prostrate.

The surface dwelling ethnicity of bug ferrets tend to be large, darkly furred, and live in smaller family groups than tunnel dwellers. their extremities are shorter and more densely furred to protect from the cold.

are there any particular differences in surface dweller languages, since more of their whiskers are covered? or still mostly tactile sign (or just different tactile sign?)

Jay Eaton

They tend to rely more on calls and auditory language to keep track of each other. Sound carries further in the open air than in the tunnels.

Are those bug ferrets wearing snowsuits? I can't... I can't handle it... it's too cute

I imagine that in some cases, the sound would travel through the tunnels very well, for a given value of frequency (higher frequencies, probably, but it depends on air density and temperature too) -- the tunnel would essentially trap the sound and prevent spreading loss (in other words, they'd form the boundaries of a duct). But I think it would depend on the reflectivity of the walls: if they're super smooth and hard (reflective), you might have a lot of reverb which would make things unpleasant. I could well imagine subterranean people purposefully encouraging some types of moss to grow there or otherwise make use of thick wall-hangings and other such installations specifically to absorb sound -- both as a means to cut down reverb in high reverb areas, but also as a privacy- or peace-enhancing measure in and around a home.

It’s always really interesting to see you developing your concepts :)
