Misc worldbuilding I'm doing for the book I'm currently writing. I need to do a less chicken-scratch version of the recycling plant layout at some point, the offices should be proportionally smaller.
Also, after some heated discussion in the hard scifi server, I'm going to have the junked spacecraft get dropped onto the surface of Dirtball via a skyhook, which uses the inertia given to it by incoming junk and other deliveries to assist outgoing craft loaded with supplies up to the portal station in high orbit. For high value junk and passenger craft, the launch loop is also part of this hand-off system-- it's basically a railway to low orbit. Low value junk is flung via the skyhook or simply dropped by ships from orbit into the "slag field" Which is a heavy cratered area full of very crunched, lightly melted bits of spacecraft. It turns materials reclaimation into a bit of a mining operation sometimes, which is maybe fitting, because...

Shikaviil Port used to be a mining operation! Avian run, the barren, mostly atmosphere-less planet was being stripped for some rare metals and an ice cap on the dark side with an unusually high quantity of heavy water, a water isotope that can be split into the isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen commonly used as fusion rocket fuel. After mining out enough rare metals to make the operation unprofitable, the avian operation withdrew and handed it off to humans, who set up Ixion recycling operation on the planet. A lot of spacecraft recycling operations take place in microgravity (since getting things in and out of a planet's gravity well is expensive) but in this case, all the equipment and infrastructure was already down there, so a ground operation worked just fine financially. The old mining infrastructure is mostly abandoned, but it does allow Ixion plant to do way more refining and light in-house manufacture than a microgravity recycling operation.

neat. ❤️ Also: yeah skyhook is the kind of stuff that "recharges" by receiving incoming stuff and "discharges" by flinging stuff in the void.

Good lore!!! It feels so real!
