No visdev art to post this week, so I'll share some of my hoarde of scribbled printer-paper comics instead.

I've been spending my free time getting ahead of myself and drawing scenes from a book I'm like 6 years out from writing, because, I guess I've been in a bit of a maniac mood. Writing characters is a lot of fun. I might post these to my social media later, maybe if I make a colored reference for Croc's character.

Croc is a biomodder, Shyam's ex-coworker and.... a bit of jackass. Ok, a lot of a jackass. In this book I'm planning to gradually squish him into the mold of a decent person but his introduction is ROUGH. Shyam, on the other hand, is terrible at reading people and way too blunt about her opinions. This is not the first or last time it gets her in trouble.

Love how Croc’s brain visibly empties of everything except “BIG” when he first sees Talita

Jay Eaton

Croc is a simple man, he sees an angry 3 meter tall woman and he moves in the opposite direction.

Talita: is he bothering you queen?

God I love when Talita gets threatening. I say this with all love in my heart for Shyam – I really like Croc! He shows a window into what the working class culture must be like for humans who don't fit into typical GMH mods like Shyam, and I can definitely see why someone as blunt as Shyam can be useful in the workplace

Jay Eaton

I love Croc too. He's a jerk and that's kind of why he's fun to write... He gets to ask all the rude questions everyone else is thinking, but are too decent to bring up. It's also fun to show the dichotomy between a modder, who strives to be more than a typ human, and a gmh, who was assigned a role and non typical body without their consent. There is mutual envy.

Love this, but let's face it Croc really DID cross a line, there's no sugar-coating it. You don't just go and PUNCH someone, because you disagree with them! That makes him not just a jerk, but a straight-up a-hole and I hope Talita put the fear of death with him.

in terms of scary and aggressive threat noises, does talita growl or hiss? i know she can rumble in her chest but something about her staple remover teeth and trunk position when shes angry makes me think shes making some type of hiss or other threat noise as well

Jay Eaton

They make a short infrasonic/low pitch threat rattle that's similar to a tiger "chuff" (though unlike a chuff, it's not a happy noise!). It's usually high pitched enough to be partly audible to humans, whereas that infrasonic "sob" they do is much lower and more drawn out, like a growl or a whine

maybe im missing something, what does Shyam mean in regards to “your Martian’s leaping out”? and in this context is it more “othering” than respectable that Croc called Talita “xer”?

Jay Eaton

Xe/xem/xer are the default pronouns that Martian English uses for aliens (Jovian English uses they/them/their). It's not necessarily othering, unless the alien has specified that they prefer other pronouns, in which case it's just regular old misgendering. Since in both forms of English the assumed default pronoun for aliens is neutral, Talita gets casually misgendered a lot by humans. Shyam too, for that matter, since tailer GMH are unisex and tend to get Assumed Nonbinary by other humans... Croc probably hasn't been told Talita's pronouns before this, but given the context, Shyam isn't feeling like correcting him politely.
