Very cool pick patrons! Horror had a real heyday in the early and mid 80s. Some of the video nasties that bypassed censorship were super visceral and grimy. Then you had guys like Cronenberg who embraced all of that, and then some, but added a layer of social intelligence and commentary to their filmmaking. What a maverick.

Awesome movie, Cronenberg is a master of body horror and his movies always seem to have some weirdly biotechnological merge between machine and flesh. The practical effects make it that much more grotesque. Cronenberg is a style all his own that for me represents some of the best of the 80s movie-making, between the effects, skewed nature of reality and philosophical depth.
