Hey James, got a suggestion for you. Sometime got to checkout The James Dean Trilogy. I would suggest watching them kind of one after the other maybe take 3 Saturdays in a row to watch and appreciate this amazing legendary actor’s amazing work. This actor was only in 3 films, but all were masterpieces, and unfortunately all three came out after he died in a car crash at the age of 24. Also, 2 out of the 3 films he was nominated for Best Actor for and the other film he was not nominated for was what made him one of the most iconic actors in film history. His 3 amazing films are: East of Eden, Rebel without a Cause, and Giant. Just thought you would enjoy and appreciate these classics films and James Dean’s performances.

So, in the film, the extra supporting characters were actually refuges from Europe. The Germans were played by persecuted Jews from Germany. In fact, only three of the actors in the film were born in America. The year this film was made was in 1942, so when they sang the French National Anthem, those are real tears of hope and sorrow. Many of them still had loved ones back home under occupied territory and the emotion couldn't be bottled up. The film couldn't have been more timely. It was rushed to its premier because the real Casablanca was invaded in early November. It premiered in NYC just two weeks before Pearl Harbor with a national release (and in the UK) later in January. In retrospect, when they talk of interment camps, Americans' then didn't have a true concept of what that meant. Decades later, as we re-watch this story play out, the dangers these characters where going through and the amount of sympathies we have for them has been nothing but heighten by our knowledge of the events now.

Well, Japanese-Americans would know what internment camps would mean. Manzanar may not have been Majdanek, but my godfathers’ parents lost everything after they got out of the camps in America.

Could be interesting, for me James Dean was always an ok actor, never really struck me as something super special. I would say East of Eden and Giant are both better films than Rebel Without a Cause, a movie which I kind of dislike, it would most likely have made a much deeper impression had I seen it 1955 instead of 1995, 40 years can be harsh on certain kinds of movies. Anyway, it would be interesting for sure to see his reaction to all of them, someone with a keener mind for cinematic language might pick up on subtleties I completely missed.
