Peter Kramer's "2001: A Space Odyssey (BFI Film Classics)" is a great book on my joint favourite film, great seeing it through your eyes James. as for the special effects they were all practical because there wasn't any CGI that come close to the effects and that level of computer graphics in the film I doubt what was on the various monitors were made by computers, they were probably animated. I agree on watching 2010 it clears a lot of the loose ends of narrative up and also is a completely different aesthetic. Oh and also taking a crack at novel is meant to fill in a lot the details.

I think H (I) A (B) L (M) may not malfunction, but realizes that the third monolith will lead to a new human cosmic consciousness that goes beyond technology, and therefore means the end of his kind. The whole film, from flying bone on, glorifies human technological accomplishments, (while the humans are all kind of boring, even banal) with HAL the ultimate product. He tries to save himself by sabotaging the mission. PS: Daisy, Daisy, HAL's song, was the first computer generated song.
