Yours truly, Johnny Dollar

John Saxon was the actor you recognized, he was a really cool character actor. I don't entirely agree with this, but the reason Nancy doesn't get the love of someone like Jamie Lee Curtis or Sigourney Weaver is that a lot of people/critics consider her acting poor in this film. Also, there are two routes for sequels to this: the long one is to watch Part 2 and 3 and then jump to A New Nightmare, or you could be like Wes Craven and just jump to the next Nightmare on Elm Street he directed, A New Nightmare. It is very good and is also part of Wes Craven's interest in deconstructing the meta of horror movies, which probably reached its peak with Scream. Personally, I like New Nightmare a lot more than Scream.

Hey man love your reaction to this film! Its one of my favorites along with Wes Cravens New Nightmare. Also just a bit of info, I think you confused Wes Craven with Sam Raimi. Raimi is the writer and director of the Evil Dead. Wes Craven has this film as writer/director as well as The Last House on The Left, The Hills Have Eyes, The People Under The Stairs, and the film which revitalized the slasher genre with Scream in 1996 along with many others. A few of his films have been inspired by real life occurrences. This one included, which he said was inspired by an LA Times article a family who survived the killing fields in Cambodia, fled to the US and a young boy who was having nightmares of the experience."He told his parents he was afraid that if he slept, the thing chasing him would get him, so he tried to stay awake for days at a time. When he finally fell asleep, his parents thought this crisis was over. Then they heard screams in the middle of the night. By the time they got to him, he was dead. He died in the middle of a nightmare. Here was a youngster having a vision of a horror that everyone older was denying. That became the central line of Nightmare on Elm Street."-Wes Craven. Fred Krueger was himself based off a homeless man that frightened Wes when he was child, the man had on an ugly green and red sweater and a fedora and stood outside his window just staring and smirking at a young Wes. I really hope you continue with series or least New Nightmare and hopefully some more Wes Craven films in general lol. Apologies for the long comment!
