To your question about the battles and why there were fought that way... The generals in the Civil War were largely older men fighting with the tactics of previous wars and with older technology in mind. This is true of most wars btw. During the Revolutionary War and the Mexican American War in 1848 the standard tactic was the group large numbers of men together and have them shot at each other at a range of about 50 yards. This was because smooth bore muskets were only accurate up to that 50 yard range. So you needed a large group of people firing to hit anything. By the time of the Civil War the guns were much better and rifles were more common, but the tactics and leadership had not caught up. So a ton of people died.

The battle at the beginning is the Battle of Antietam. Single bloodiest day in the war with roughly 22,000 casualties.
