These films came out in 2001-2003. 20 years old and still stands to the test of time. Shows like Game of Thrones wouldn’t be what it is without these groundbreaking films. Forever my favorites 👌

FunFact if you didn't know: The main cast and director developed such a friendship on set that they went to get matching tattoos when filming was over.

So...No one gonna talk about Aragorn and the helmet?

I don't know if you're planning to watch the extended editions or not, but there's an interesting detail in one of the extended scenes. Aragorn is one of the Dunedain, the direct descendants of the Numenoreans who still possess some portion of the Numenorean grace. As such, his lifespan is much greater than that of normal men. In the time of this film, Aragorn was 87. Eowyn asks him about this in the extended scene and they discuss how he actually rode to war with Thengel, King Theoden's father, many years ago. It's one of the reasons for Theoden's attitude toward Aragorn, whom he knows to be the rightful heir to the throne of Gondor, and whose experience far outstrips his own.

Yo I'd just like to recommend a movie real quick if that's aight. The Power of the Dog directed by Jane Campion. A beautiful story with themes of sexuality and acceptance, and it's a technical masterpiece. Definitely the most unique western I've ever seen!

lol fuck, posted before i finished writing by mistake. So there's been a lot of tiktok jokes about it. That if you watch the movie with someone and the other person hasn't seen it, then the person who has seen it can't keep their mouth shut about the broken toe. Like we literally can't contain ourselves and have to point it out immediately xD So every time I see that scene it's all I can think about.

I mean. I'm sure it was a thing before tiktok too, but tiktok brought it back to life.

You asked about the inspiration for the art. Peter Jackson actually hired the most famous illustrators for the books to do the art concepts for these movies. So often you'll see tableaux in the movies that are straight off the pages of the illustrated editions of the books. Regarding the cloak hiding Frodo and Sam, that is a bit that is better explained in the extended editions (and its moments like those that had people encouraging you to watch the extended editions, there is a lot of stuff in this movie in particular that lacks sufficient context in the theatrical release--for instance, Faramir's entire character doesn't make nearly as much sense in the theatrical version.) In the extended version, the elves gave the fellowship gifts (not just the phial Galadriel gave Frodo) and those cloaks were among those gifts. The Fellowship anthem is definitely cool, but for my money, that haunting Edoras theme is my favorite piece of music. Andy Serkis won an MTV Movie Award for Best Virtual Performance for this movie, and Andy Serkis's acceptance speech was hilarious: https://youtu.be/BxVNE70fLxY This film came out in December 2002. The released one a year three years running. The DVDs would then come out around April the next year, and the extended edition DVDs would come out around October or November. They actually filmed a scene for the extended edition of Return of the King a few days AFTER winning the Academy Award for that movie.
