There's a story that with Carol Reed's use of the Dutch angles to portray unease and tension led William Wyler, Reed's friend and fellow director, to send him a spirit level, accompanied by a note saying: "Carol, next time you make a picture, just put it on top of the camera, will you?"

That is what makes good old films great. All they have is the writing, the acting, the cinematography and the editing to entertain people and nothing else. If you liked the dialogue in this, most any high profile noir film from the 50s or earlier can match. Hell, The Sweet Smell of Success often feels like 50's version of Tarantino wrote the dialogue.
